Still it is hard to argue with how much is packed into this release, and I found myself exploring it all over and over again. The sheer amount of content makes up for the lack of innovation in some areas, and while I don’t think it stands out as much as Advanced Warfare, it still keeps me playing a series I never thought I would care about year in, and year out.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III continues the evolution that began in last year’s Advanced Warfare. The current-generation of the mega popular war shooter series impresses with (some) freedom of choice and fun abilities. So much so that most of the time, the rather pedestrian visuals and unmemorable story won’t be a deal breaker. Especially, when you consider all the extra content like a second zombie themed campaign.

  • Even though it misses most of its most ambitious gambles, I enjoyed my time with the Blops 3 campaign. There’s a lot to do and see in the multiplayer modes, even if I do find them exhausting and repetitive. Appreciating Blops 3 is like enjoying a great B-movie: it’s not the best story around and it certainly isn’t going to pack an emotional punch, but it’s loud, it’s flashy, and it makes me laugh and have a good time.

  • The third Black Ops puts a large focus on camaraderie and just making things more fun than before in all directions. Even though some of it feels more of the same when compared to Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III's unconventional experiments sits atop refined shooting mechanics and smooth controls, resulting in some excellent gameplay. Toss in a ton of replayability to be gained from both the short campaign, Zombies Mode and multiplayer, and this is one of the strongest entries of the franchise to date.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III offers few surprises, but even so, it's a great package. The campaign sometimes feels like it's trying too hard, but is ultimately solid and enjoyable. Zombies mode is a nice bonus. But really, it's the multiplayer that steals the show. It doesn't stray far from the usual formula, but it's been honed and polished to perfection to deliver seriously brilliant multiplayer competition.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III is a big step forward on multiplayer play, the quality of the single-player story, the imaginative story paths, and the outstanding quality of the wide-open landscapes, and the wide variety of enemies. I suspect that Activision has a very good chance of restoring the series to record levels in comparison to the last couple of years.

  • If you’d like to play a limp amalgamation of Deus Ex, Crysis, and BioShock with a multiplayer mode you’ve been able to play eight times in as many years, then Call of Duty: Black Ops III is definitely for you. For the rest of you, it’s just another condom of a game to be spunked into and thrown in the trash.

  • At its heart, Black Ops 3's multiplayer is still very much Treyarch's take on Call of Duty. This means it's fun — Call of Duty and Black Ops found a basis for solid, competitive multiplayer that worked almost a decade ago, and it still resonates here and there. But I'm surprised by how familiar, how recognizable it all feels, which is even more disappointingly the case with its campaign.

  • Black Ops III's narrative doesn't support the campaign in any meaningful way, either. It tells an incomprehensible story about AI ascendancy and the moral grays of a hyper-connected future, raising intriguing questions but never bothering to answer them. At the end of it all, after hours of soulless shooting and unremarkable storytelling, Black Ops III delivered its nebulous twist, and I didn't dwell on it.

  • This doesn’t feel like a conclusion to a trilogy. Black Ops III is its own game, and the most robust offering in the franchise this generation. All the new talents don’t feel like tricks to keep fans occupied until the next installment. They’re essential refinements that speed up combat and give players even more chances to show off. No matter which path you choose, you’re going to have a good time.
