  • Screwing the lids on bottles of pop, bomb disposal and putting little boxes in bigger boxes: there are many jobs that we rely on robots to do for us, tasks too dull, dangerous or repetitive for fleshy humans to bother with. But look! Here comes Chromehounds to show us exactly how dull things can get and how boring it can be when you've got metal skin and cameras for eyes.

  • A lot was expected from veteran Mech game developer From Software, of Armoured Core fame, but Chromehounds is ultimately an ambitious failure that sounds great on paper but proves to be a tediously slow, uninvolving experience for anyone less than a hardcore giant robot fan. It's simply another 360 title that doesn't have enough metal (sorry, mettle) to justify its next gen status and price.

  • The single-player game is sorely lacking in several key areas, and the online game, while fun, does require a lot more effort on the player than say ... (insert favorite game here). It is, however, a good first effort for a mech game on the 360, and that fact alone will help those players pining for a little mech action.

Chromehounds does well with textbook elements of the mech genre, but lacks the appeal of being exciting, dramatic, flashy or innovative. It's nothing we haven't seen done before with more energy and enthusiasm in countless other mech games.

  • Chromehounds is likely to be a love-it-or-hate-it game for most of those willing to give it a try. Players expecting a conventional mech sim may be put off by the relative simplicity of the combat and will probably wish that there were more to the single-player portion of the game, especially since the story sets up a compelling conflict. At the same time, the online multiplayer portion of this game, while absolutely the highlight of the package, is fairly dense, even if all you want is to jump into combat.

If you don't have Xbox Live, don't bother with this game. Since all the single-player missions are training sessions for the online experience, it really feels like an incomplete, unfulfilling package by itself. That being said, the online modes definitely deserve credit. It's one of the most robust multiplayer packages on the Xbox 360, offering a persistent world within which players can wage numerous sorts of war, make money, buy more parts and assemble more powerful Hounds.

  • There are some plus points, certainly - control of the COMBAS towers, in particular, has a tangible importance that resonates throughout with greater effect than any of the other UT-Domination-inspired game ideas I've encountered recently. But like the mech editor, it's a well implemented idea in a fairly shonky game - and not one that I can imagine Xbox 360 players sticking with for more than a handful of hours tops, no matter how starved they are for new releases at the moment.

About the game

This squad-based action title puts gamers in control of giant mechanized military weapons of war. CHROMEHOUNDS offers an intense look at war from the cockpits of colossal metal vehicles. These heavily-armed weapons of war, called HOUNDS, dominate ground battles during warfare in the near-future. Squads of HOUNDS take to the field in international factions, cooperating with and complementing each other in terms of firepower, range of movement, and abilities.
