· Jul 18, 2025 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - It's a game that can be enjoyed for all ages and if you decide to pursue all the sidequests, complete the decorating minigames, and find all of the collectibles, you can certainly spend a lot of time in the world of Chicory. My only gripe is a personal one—that I didn’t play this game last year—because without a doubt it makes for a wonderful late addition to the best of what 2021 had to offer. I cannot wait to see what Greg, Lena, Em, Alexis and Madeline will make next, because Chicory can’t be described as anything other than a piece of modern art.
Willem Hilhorst · Jan 18, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Chicory is simple to play but impressively long and complex, with perfect controls, performance and visuals. Throw yourself into painting the world and you’ll be left with a game that’s very much your own and speaks to you directly – a beautiful marriage of mechanics, themes and visuals.
Stuart Gipp · Dec 23, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Chicory: A Colorful Tale is like a warm hug from a wise old aunt, simultaneously bursting with creativity and offering an unblinking but hopeful look at humanity.
Peter Mattsson · Sep 29, 2021 Reviewed onRead full review - Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a game about self-exploration, frequently presenting earnest themes that can be challenging to engage with given how relatable they can feel.
Alessandro Barbosa · Aug 12, 2021 Reviewed on PC, PS5, PS4Read full review - I went into Chicory a bit dubious, but it surpassed my expectations with flying colors. The world and its inhabitants are a delight, its puzzles remain clever throughout the journey, and its main painting mechanic is the perfect stress releaser. Chicory taught me never to judge a coloring book by its cover, and that you don’t have to be a master painter to have fun with colors.
Ben Reeves · Jul 12, 2021 Reviewed on PC - There are some nitpicks one could make about certain gameplay moments that require pinpoint brush accuracy not working correctly or some of the platforming sections feeling off, but really the only big knock against it are the lackluster boss fights. It's otherwise close to being perfect for what it is and is certainly one of the better Zelda-like indie games.
Dalton Cooper · Jul 03, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Chicory: A Colorful Tale is bound to the template set forth by The Legend of Zelda, but, rather than offering reflexive glibness, or inking the affair with irony, its critique wraps warmly around its subject, like a scarf.
Josh Wise · Jul 03, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - If you like the idea of an open world adventure filled with wonderfully written characters, engaging puzzles and a heart-warming story, don’t hesitate to give Chicory: A Colorful Tale a try. It’s so much more than “a game you colour in yourself”; it’s a journey filled with heart and soul. It isn’t free of frustrations, but they’re easily forgiven thanks to just how charming and wonderfully unusual this adventure is.
Kim Snaith · Jun 21, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a game that surprised me in many ways - its purpose and intent bending and changing throughout playtime. I went in expecting something charming and cute with just enough depth to keep me invested. It gave me so much more than that. I received a charming and engaging puzzle game that dealt with genuine human emotions of imposter syndrome, depression, what we do for our art and so much more. I received a genuinely brilliant video game.
