- Bramble: The Mountain King is a dark and brooding slice of Nordic folklore that's well worth digging into, despite some notable technical shortcomings. There's an inherent jankiness to the gameplay here that permeates its platforming, boss battles and exploration. However, if you can make peace with these rough edges, you'll find a tale that's still dripping in atmosphere, packed full of wonderful details and a menagerie of foul fairy-tale beasties that draw you in and keep the short campaign well and truly interesting.
PJ O'Reilly · Jun 27, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - The horror adventure game, Bramble: The Mountain King, effectively contrasts terrifying imagery with the pastoral scenery of its Nordic setting. Horror isn’t generally my thing, but the compelling story and captivating music were more than enough to carry me through this dark tale.
David Temple · May 01, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Bramble: The Mountain King is a fascinating adventure. Each character you meet on your Nordic expedition is wonderfully designed and will instantly capture your imagination. Even though the movement is a little rigid and the game is extremely linear, it manages to deliver a unique experience that will fester in your psyche.
Jaz Sagoo · May 01, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Overall, Bramble: The Mountain King has so much to offer. It’s almost a miracle that everything fits into just one game, with its incredibly rich story, diverse world, and the many twists you’ll encounter. This game has proven to be a masterpiece that isn’t just played, it is experienced and can appeal to anybody who wants a great story… And possibly a look at some of the more bizarre creatures from Nordic and Scandinavian folklore.
R3GR3T · Apr 29, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Bramble: The Mountain King is worth a single playthrough, but the lack of any real depth to its gameplay makes it a difficult recommendation to those that might not be drawn in by its gorgeous visuals and atmosphere.
Shunal Doke · Apr 28, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - A focused horror adventure with mature themes and cursed imagery, Bramble: The Mountain King is a hidden gem that will irrevocably leave a mark on some people. Inevitably all decisions carry their weight and change oneself, and Olle’s chilling journey must be witnessed by all who are interested in an epic, suspenseful tale.
AndresPlays · Apr 28, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The game's puzzle-platforming segments do nothing extraordinary, yet strike a nice balance between simplicity and challenge, and though the set camera and cumbersome movement can often get in the way, frequent checkpoints alleviate much of the frustration. However, depending on how much performance issues annoy you – stuttering, pop-in, frame rate drops – this is an adventure that might be best played elsewhere.
Lowell Bell · Apr 27, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Bramble: The Mountain King is as gorgeous as it is horrifying, with surprises lurking around every corner. The game excels at building tension and suspense while maintaining visual splendor throughout. Although the game isn’t particularly long–I rolled credits around 7 hours–it is an experience that horror game enthusiasts will not want to miss.
Larryn Bell · Apr 26, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - If Dimfrost had consistently shown the same degree of attentiveness to Bramble: The Mountain King's moment-to-moment interactions, we could be talking of an instant classic, but the studio seemed more intent on delivering a powerful narrative than furnishing it with an engaging game throughout. As it stands, it's only the world they have crafted that lingers in the mind after the final credits have rolled: a twilight dimension whose darkness is tempered with a sense of wonder.
Alexander Chatziioannou · Apr 26, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - To delve much further into the game would spoil the sense of adventure. I shouldn’t tell you about the stories, the monsters, or the ending of the game. I shouldn’t mention any more of the things that made me gasp. But I should say, “Play this game” if you’ve ever wanted a puzzle platformer, Limbo-esque horror game that drags you through a swamp of grim-dark Nordic fairy tales by your ears. It’s an excellent, labor-of-love game filled with little details that make the world feel very much alive - although no one wants that. I’d never leave my house again.
