- Despite some flaws, I couldn’t help but play BOXBOXBOY! with a smile on my face. Qbby and his quadrilateral friends are as adorable as ever, their blank stares strangely appealing, and the clean, crisp black and white visuals, such a stark contrast to Nintendo’s normal color bombardment, are minimalist eye candy.
Patrick Murphy · Jul 31, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - BoxBoxBoy! is a simple and straightforward sequel to a great 2D puzzle adventure. It's not trying to reinvent the genre, or even its predecessor. Instead it adds the ability to create two sets of squares, and then takes that idea to its furthest extreme. This creates a sequel that works as a standalone game, while enhancing the experience for those who enjoyed the first title.
Kyle Hanson · Jul 15, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Sure, it’s not difficult, nor is it as personality-driven as other HAL games like Kirby, but it’s a similar, simple charm. Even for the average puzzle-solving blockhead.
Kevin Schaller · Jul 14, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - BoxBoxBoy may be remarkably similar to the original BoxBoy, stripping it of its experimental indie cred and slipping it into a comfortable and safe sequel – but comfortable and safe are not bad things. Those are the words I use to describe all of my favorite clothing. You get more of what made the original BoxBoy worth a recommendation, and the same can be said of this follow-up.
Kyle Hilliard · Jul 12, 2016 Reviewed on 3DS - That’s fine, since it’s still an adorable little puzzler that can easily keep one occupied for a few entertaining hours, but with a returning act comes a reduction in the cute surprise that made the first so endearing. We’ve seen a lot of what this series has to offer already, and the doubling of boxes doesn’t exactly shake that overwhelming deja vu.
Jim Sterling · Jul 10, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - I never had a chance to check out the first title, but had heard a lot about it. With getting the chance to review the sequel, I was coming in completely fresh, so I can’t speak for how this feels in comparison. What I can say is, for the price and content of quality, if the puzzle genre is player’s forte, this is a no brainer. BoxBoxBoy is charming, easy to get into, and quality over quantity.
Justin Celani · Jul 08, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - I didn’t feel lost jumping in with BoxBoxBoy, but the game does feel like a true sequel. The story is super simple, and the world is really bare. I enjoyed my time with the game, though. It is a perfect example of how great game design will trump graphics and hardware innovations every time. BoxBoxBoy might be a must-buy, but it does feel like DLC for a game I’ve never played.
Adam Abou-Nasr · Jul 06, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - The game is priced to sell at $4.99, but there isn’t a great deal of game here. The puzzles can definitely provide some entertainment and the game succeeds at bringing in new mechanics to keep mixing things up. It really is quite easy to recommend to genre fans, even if it feels a bit barebones in some aspects.
Kenneth Richardson · Jul 05, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Beyond the end goal and personal satisfaction gained from completing it, there isn't much to do in BoxBoxBoy!. You can enjoy a small set of comic strips (which are cute, but ultimately not worth going out of your way for), musical tracks, and costumes (if you own the original it allows you to import more outfits). That's basically it.
Chris Carter · Jul 03, 2016 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - BOXBOXBOY! doesn't exactly blow expectation out of the water - the only real change is literally in the name - but having two sets of boxes to work with makes for more interesting and complex puzzles than before. While we'd argue that previous fans will get the most out of this sequel in the long run, it's a perfectly manageable entry point for newcomers if the tight mechanics and bite-sized chunks of puzzling goodness are starting to sound pretty good this time around.
