- No. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night lacks the depth of the Castlevania series, which inspired it. With unresponsive controls, it’s a chore to play.
Jack Brassell · Jan 04, 2021 Reviewed on AndRead full review - It’s a good game, and it fits mobile quite well. I’d probably recommend picking up Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ahead of this game, but there can and should be room in your life for both.
Shaun Musgrave · Dec 14, 2020 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - It’s a real shame because underneath the stigma of a troubled release and a lost first impression of a polished product, lies a potentially magnificent game that holds true to what it once ambitiously set out to achieve.
Darren Palma · Nov 05, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is pure fun, and I couldn't be more pleased with the experience. Diving back into creator Koji Igarashi's iconic style of gameplay has been deeply nostalgic for me; I even found myself humming old Symphony of the Night tunes after playing the new release for a few hours. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a prime example of how much fun the Metroidvania genre has to offer, and will undoubtedly serve as a point of comparison for all retro-inspired platformers that follow it.
Kevin Tucker · Jul 29, 2019 Reviewed onRead full review - All in all, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is exactly what it was marketed as: the revival of the Igarashi Castlevania games. It might not have Konami's IP, but it has the feel, the gameplay, and the style that no other game has quite been able to replicate. You'll love it if you're a fan of the franchise, and it's a great place to start if you're a newcomer. Some annoying design decisions and general performance issues hold it back. In the end, morning has come to vanquish the terrible night, and Bloodstained is hopefully the start of a new generation of Igavania.
Chris "Atom" DeAngelus · Jul 17, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - From the forgettable and dull story to the unbalanced gameplay, Ritual of the Night can’t compete with the best of the series. However, based on its own merits, it still provides a journey worth playing at least once or twice. Without a doubt, the game’s release is worth celebrating for, though it’s missing that creative spark Castlevania series has had in spades.
Garland Pan · Jul 15, 2019 Reviewed on PS4 - Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night shows that Koji Igarashi's genius with the invention of the modern Metrovania genre wasn't just a singular event. Through numerous teams working together to bring his vision to life, Bloodstained has become a modern classic for the evergrowing genre.
Kai Powell · Jul 13, 2019 Reviewed onRead full review - Bloodstained is great. More content is promised for the future. I sunk way too much time into it when I had other games to review. It’s addictive and likely making my top 10 this year. I hope it does well enough that this isn’t the last we see of Bloodstained.
Anthony Mann · Jul 09, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you’re willing to look past most of the mistakes, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a great addition to this year’s lineup of Metroidvanias, and proof that Kickstarter can, for better or worse, produce an actual good video game from a massive funding. It’s far from being a classic, and it certainly isn’t up there with Symphony of the Night, but good games can exist somewhere in between – and in that space, you may end up enjoying Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for what it is: an imperfect love letter to a beloved series.
Kenneth Araullo · Jul 08, 2019 Reviewed onRead full review - This is a great game that does everything one would hope from the genre, but this really is a nostalgia goody bag for Castlevania fans and because of that it’s so far my personal favorite 2019 title. The developers did play it safe with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and drew heavily from previous Castlevanias instead of introducing some new ideas and concepts. The result is an excellent game and it would be great to see Bloodstained grow as a franchise, adding more innovations to help balance out the heavy-handed sprinkling of nostalgia.
