  • The game doesn't go for adding on extras from other genres, relying instead on pure gameplay to drive the title. The short length, which was normal for offerings from that time period and genre, is buoyed by gameplay modes that feel worthwhile instead of tacked on. For run-and-gun fans, Blazing Chrome is an essential addition to the gaming library.

The difficulty never felt unfair and instead teaches the player how to handle everything the game may throw at them. The checkpoints are generous on normal modes, and for those looking for the ultimate challenge there is a hardcore mode. It feels like Blazing Chrome has something for everyone.

  • Blazing Chrome’s gameplay borrows a lot from many arcade classics, no question. But a shorter experience that’d be worth a few quarters in a coin-op might not be worth $16.99, especially with the highly repetitive nature (and communication error popups). For better or worse, this title has the overall feel of a relic. As an older gamer who grew up with arcades, it should hold high appeal to me. Yet I can’t help but find myself thinking more about the games it’s trying to emulate, at least when playing solo

  • Blazing Chrome doesn't try to be anything more than a classic run-and-gun and thus easily exceeds expectations, although the length does leave something to be desired.

  • Blazing Chrome is an instant classic. In no small way has JoyMasher lovingly captured the sound and fury of classic Contra in a way that feels truly authentic.  Despite the lack of online co-op, my biggest gripe with Blazing Chrome is that the sequel isn't already out. I'm already yearning for more, which is nothing short of a good thing for JoyMasher, and the potential for future DLC or sequels.

  • Blazing Chrome an excellent throwback to the games of yesteryear, and a loving tribute to Contra and Metal Slug that establishes its own identity through beautiful art, fantastic design, and an excellent soundtrack.

  • Boasting challenging run and gun gameplay, an impressive amount of replayability, and an unmatched level of nostalgia, Blazing Chrome is a must have. The allure of some fast and frantic retro style couch coop is enough to sell us on the game alone. We highly recommend you check out Blazing Chrome when it releases on July 11th, 2019.

  • Coming in hot after the release of Konami’s Contra Anniversary Collection, Blazing Chrome steals its thunder. It out-Contras Contra, basically. It pretty much perfects the run ‘n’ gun formula, only it doesn’t really offer anything new while doing so. That shouldn’t, and won’t, be a problem for the many clambering for the return of the action-packed genre though. And who knows, developer Joymasher might throw in some surprises if Blazing Chrome does well enough to get a sequel. And it really should do.

  • If you’re angry with the new direction the Contra series is taking, or if you’re just looking for a great retro action title to play on-the-go, there aren’t many titles out there that are as good as Blazing Chrome. This is one of the best retro-inspired indies I have ever played despite its small, but noticeable, share of issues.

  • Blazing Chrome is an amazing package that does exactly what it sets out to do and is for people who know what they want from it. By the same (arcade) token, it is difficult to recommend to anyone who even begins to question whether it’s a game for them. Beating Blazing Chrome is a badge of honor, the latest test of skill tossed onto a pile of old cartridges. You can spend hours and hours grinding out this handful of stages, experiencing both intense frustration and the rush of victory.
