  • Finally, the game also includes a fantastic multiplayer mode, obviously you can fight one on one offline which is great fun, but taking it online is the next level in trying to prove yourself as a capable fighter. ...Graphically BlazBlue is a stunning example of how a fighter should look, it’s so polished, runs smoothly and also looks fantastic in each and every arena you play in. The level of colour and detail on offer is there for all to see, making this one of the best looking fighting games around.

  • BlazBlue is so filled to the brim with all sorts of tech stuff that you really begin to feel tired if you think about them all for too long. But once you start getting into it the whole thing begins to open up and all of a sudden you're playing one of the best 2D fighters around today.

  • BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger might be a little ostentatious in its delivery, but it's hard to deny the game's inherent charms. From the beautifully animated character sprites, to the flashy fighting mechanics - BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is a throw-back arcade beat 'em up that feels fresher than it does nostalgic.

  • Unfortunately, mastering the combat system requires a fair amount of dedicated erudition. Blaz can be a fairly defensive fighter -- a wide variety of different counters, cancels, and blocks complicate the battle system, and newcomers will take their lumps before mastering the intricacies of each character's special drive attacks. In the hands of an expert fighter this game is stunning, but joystick jockeys who are out of shape might want to start an intense training regimen.

  • BlazBlue is weird, bright, and loud. The colorful artwork, wild action, and totally unique characters may intrigue you, assuming they aren't too much for you to handle. If you can get past the noisy presentation and bizarre characters, you'll find a very solid fighting game with plenty of offline options and excellent online play.

  • BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is probably a game best suited for people who have been playing fighting games for a long time, but even then, its style seems to be deliberately divisive. It's certainly worth trying out if you're a fan of the genre, but it's entirely possible that you'll find the whole thing to be a big, loud mess.

  • BlazBlue's limited edition is already sold out across the country, and the same thing may happen to the standard edition to be put on sale later this month. The game is already a hit, and it deserves it. Still, BlazBlue isn't quite up there with my favorite 2D fighters. The sometimes cliche' character designs, cumbersome story mode, small roster, and limited single player modes keep the game from being truly "top tier."

  • In spite of its uncompromising take on anime or the liberties it takes with the English language, BlazBlue is a true champion for the masses. Its over the top, vibrant style is a true spectacle in HD, and its strokes of fighting innovation trickle down into every one of its bells and whistles. If you're looking for an extremely smooth fighter with pomp and panache, BlazBlue is a sure bet.

  • The fighting system in BlazBlue is the deepest I have seen this generation, and the level of exploration that is possible within the combat is something that is rare indeed. The story mode was also a welcome surprise, especially considering this is a genre where most titles are content to just keep the story relegated to a few sentences before fights describing a ridiculous premise. I was even impressed to see BlazBlue's stunning 2D graphics, which prove that you don't have to go 3D in order to have graphics that wow both technically and stylistically.

Honestly, there's no way I could describe everything I love about BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger because I would be writing a novella. All you need to know is that this has become one of my favorite fighters of all time and the level of polish and detail this 2D wonder has is amazing. The character designs are excellent, the fighting mechanics are top-notch and there are even extra animated scenes that feature chibi versions of the characters talking about the BlazBlue universe.

    About the game

A 2D one-on-one fighting game by ARC System Works (the makers of Guilty Gear.) Produced by Guilty Gear producer Toshimichi Mori, the game features an all-original cast (including many weapon fighters) and uses a four-button control scheme (weak, medium and strong attacks plus an EX button which makes your character perform unique special attacks.) The fighting system is based around players being able to continue combos when opponents are in a down state.
