  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is still the same entertaining first-person shooter it was when it was first released but on the Xbox 360 the minor improvements just make this the game you’ll want to own. If you’re expecting a whole new game built from the ground up you will be in for a disappointment but if you’re looking for a fun game with an addictive online multiplayer mode then you will definitely want to buy this game.

Though the single-player provides some feasible outcomes to the what-if scenarios posed by the desperate fiscal, military and political interests of the superpowers in Kazakh oil, the multiplayer provides a more realistic answer to what might happen - endless, bloody, war. Thankfully, at the moment we only have to enjoy that experience, watching hordes of men mown down like senseless cattle, rather than take part ourselves.

  • Still, if you didn’t get on the Battlefield bandwagon last year, and the community for Modern Combat on the 360 grows to a healthy level, this will be a great alternative if you ever tire of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.

  • If your online gaming is restricted to consoles, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat isn't a bad option. It lacks the insane large scale combat of the superior PC game and is more akin to something like Star Wars Battlefront, but if you find the right group of people, online matches can be a lot of fun. A next-gen game that matched the epic nature of Battlefield 2 on the PC would have been great, but the slight gameplay changes and the hugely improved visuals make Modern Combat on the Xbox 360 the best version to date.

For diehard folks who loved the first console version, this Xbox 360 version is an interesting conundrum. It's better, but not by much. The 360 version of Burnout Revenge offered more advancements than Battlefield. So, it's hard to recommend this, if you've already played the hell out of the last fall's game. The other side of the coin is this: It's still a hell of a fun game with a great online mode that functions better now that it did before. Plus, you'll get achievements. Such a difficult choice to make!

  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is still very much the same game as its predecessors on the PS2 and the Xbox. All the necessary elements are there to make a great shooter--superficially at least--like infantry and vehicles together in large-scale, combined-arms battles. The hot-swap feature is also really cool and an idea we hope will get expanded on should the console franchise continue on. The primary difference with the Xbox 360 version is the upgraded visuals, which make for a sharper-looking game.

  • Those that have already exhausted the game's potential would be rightly hesitant to splash out on another copy unless they really feel the bizarre need to unlock Achievements and grow that Gamerscore. If you've had enough self-control to wait for this shinier version you're in the best position here and Battlefield 2 comes highly recommended. Its single-player campaign is elevated from mediocrity with the inventive Hot Swapping feature, while twenty-four players, armed to the teeth and unforgiving in their violence, is what Xbox Live was made for.
