  • Badland has a striking (if very familiar) visual style. What music exists is good, and the sound effects are strong, if overpowering. HD Rumble can be adjusted. Aesthetics aren’t an issue here. Again, it’s just gameplay that feels dated, no longer clicking in a way it might once have.

  • Badland: Game of the Year Edition has attracted more than 28 million players worldwide, and there can be no denying that it wouldn’t have been able to do so without some creative flair. But, in the transition to console, it seems to have failed to retain that same spark.

  • If you’re visiting Badland for the first time, or are a loyal player that’s curious to see how the game’s evolved on a new platform, you will not be disappointed. It’s no wonder that Frogmind won so many awards for the mobile incarnation of this game, and this holds true in Badland: Game of the Year Edition. With awesome multiplayer levels and over 15 hours of story content, you’ll be spoilt by the sheer number of stages to explore and puzzles to conquer.

  • The frustration of the later levels and all the level skipping that I did to see if it would improve really left a sour taste in my mouth. There's a really good game here, just know your frustration point and be ready to jump out when it gets there.

  • With games like this where you are constantly bumping into objects the audio often repeats the same ear dulling sounds until it’s burned into your brain. This is not the case in Badlands; every time you bump into something it sounds different, even if it’s just a slight change in pitch. It just makes a huge difference. Along with the music and ambience being fantastic, the audio built on top of an already pretty good game make it that much better.

Badlands offers local co-op, multiplayer, and a ton of levels to keep players going, yet it feels like a game made for quick access, and I found myself getting rather bored after 30 minutes of play. On a mobile system this game feels right at home with in its casual play time, but I can’t help but feel a little alienated with it on consoles.

  • In bringing Badland to consoles, Clony and co. make a flap for the big time but unfortunately fall a little short. Frogmind saw great success on smartphones with this title, unfortunately this does not translate as well to the PlayStation Vita.

  • Badland is as dark, brooding, and mysterious as the most sullen teenager, but this seemingly simple game is built on a foundation of ingenious design. Its hands-off approach to guiding the player makes for an invigorating challenge where it counts, and plentiful checkpoints help alleviate the frustration that comes from later levels. It teaches you how to interact with the environment before turning it all on its head with a slew of mutations that change your abilities, and that's a little bit brilliant. Don't be mistaken, a sense of repetition means this is definitely well-suited to shorter play sessions, but we still reckon you should have your eyes on the horizon for this beastie.

  • What it comes down to is that, even though it's a redesigned version of its mobile counterpart, BADLAND: Game of the Year Edition is experimental and rich enough to justify its existence on a home console.

  • Badland: Game of the Year Edition translates to PlayStation platforms well. The understated but attractive aesthetic runs smooth and fast on all platforms, and there's tons of content. The challenge does get a little stiff, however, and the experience was clearly designed around short play sessions. It's unlikely to hold your interest forever, then, but for the short time that it does it's a splendid game.

    About the game

BADLAND is an atmospheric side-scrolling action adventure platformer set in a gorgeous forest full of various inhabitants, trees and flowers. Although the forest appears to be right out of a beautiful fairy tale, there
