- Baba Is You is absolutely essential on iOS. The game itself was already amazing and I’m glad the iOS conversion is nearly perfect. While my two problems with it will not be an issue for everyone, I’m hoping future updates bring iCloud save sync and the ability to create a suspend save in the middle of a level.

This is an audacious, engaging puzzle game that’s every bit as good on mobile as it is on PC and Switch.

And while it may sound like just another sketchy smartphone game, it’s surprisingly one of the most unique puzzlers you can find on the Switch and the way in which it encourages you to break its rules and create your own ones is refreshing and unique. Its sudden difficulty spike and lack of a hint system could easily discourage some from continuing, but if you enjoy a good brain teasing, you could easily spend hours getting lost within Baba’s puzzles.

But when the rules change in each level, it makes the through line to the solution more difficult to find than it should be. Baba is You sings during its early puzzles when there are multiple solutions and lots of opportunities to feel like a genius, but when the variables pile up, it becomes restrictive.

Their relief can feel miraculous--but only so long as you understand what you’ve done and feel you’ve earned the victory. For the most part, Baba is You’s most brutal stages do offer this balance of challenge and reward. By puzzle 50--there are 200 in all--levels are flipping upside down, rules are compounded elaborately, and sentences are sprawling out to command things like “wall and hedge and key and flag is word,” to take one real late example.

I knew once I found the solution, I would either be kicking myself or be in awe of such a well-crafted puzzle. Baba Is You uses that marshmallow fluff dough ball face to trick you into thinking this is just another cutesy puzzle game, but it is so much more than that. It handles gameplay and new mechanics better than any other puzzle game I have ever forced myself to get through.

Its basic look is deceiving for how tough and clever most of the level designs are. I cannot express enough how highly addicting this game is. While I played it on my PC, it is also available for the Switch and honestly, I think that might be the better way to play if you have access to one.
