- Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream presents an immediately engaging gameplay hook. The story is interesting and can get new players caught up fairly quickly, though the character designs can leave a lot to be desired. Battles and alchemy are a ton of fun, but the game does have trouble explaining all of its systems effectively.
David Flynn · Mar 20, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Atelier Sophie 2 manages to synthesise old and new in a way befitting improvements to the franchise while leaving it comfortably with the rest of the Mysterious games. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of Atelier Ryza 2, but will still definitely keep most Atelier fans quite happy.
Paige Chamberlain · Mar 18, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream does nothing totally different as a sequel, the streamlined crafting and simplified combat system allow players to be more invested in the story without becoming bogged down in complex game mechanics. For long-time fans, however, those mechanics are still available.
James Colozzi · Mar 09, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is a vast improvement over its predecessor. Borrowing exploration elements from the Atelier entries while keeping its traditional turn-based combat system is a great way to help it stand out within its own franchise. On top of that, the battles have more depth than ever before. Sophie Neuenmuller’s new adventure is well worth it for veterans and newcomers alike.
George Yang · Mar 09, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is a very by-the-numbers Atelier title, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's fun to play, has a strong cast, and is nicely polished. It doesn't try anything new or special, and it feels very much like a "safe" game. If you like Atelier titles, Atelier Sophie 2 is going to be a solid, if unexceptional, entry in your collection. It's an improvement on the original Sophie through and through, but it doesn't live up to other recent titles.
Chris "Atom" DeAngelus · Mar 08, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is another solid entry in the franchise, and it’s clear that developer Gust is trying to modernize the series one little step at a time. Even though we did very much enjoy this new adventure for Sophie and Plachta, we do feel that the series will need to make a few bigger changes to stay relevant or to prepare itself for some ‘next-gen’ entries in the series. That being said, we are looking forward to the next story, and we love that after this many years this franchise keeps bringing lighthearted entries in the JRPG genre.
Ibuki · Mar 07, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Atelier Sophie 2, especially in the mornings, as it’s a bright and laid-back game to start the day with. It’s well-paced and it’s very rewarding to learn the smaller facets. I spent more time plumbing the world for ingredients and rewards than I did with the Ryza games, and that means one thing: it really nailed the recipe.
Zoey Handley · Mar 02, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Atelier Sophie 2 does many things right to warrant a recommendation. It’s a great entry-level RPG with some intricate systems that will keep you entertained. The turn-based system might be a turn-off for some players, but I believe that we could work more with this genre, and Gust seems like they are willing to experiment more with it.
Ule Lopez · Feb 28, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Atelier Sophie 2 stands as a wonderful achievement for Gust and the Atelier series. What we have here is an entry that feels like the perfect fusion of the old and the new. Sophie’s new adventure may not have much to offer up in the story department, but it more than makes up for this with its streamlined design, thrilling combat, expansive world, and addictive alchemy system. This is a title we’d recommend to both longtime fans and newcomers—it's one of the best Atelier releases yet. If you’re at all curious about this one, we’d strongly encourage you to give it a shot.
Mitch Vogel · Feb 25, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - For a series that has been hiding in the shadows and deemed a cult classic franchise for quite some time, Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist Of The Mysterious Dream proves that even though it may be the underdog in a genre saturated with many, many entries, it can come out from the shadows and prove that it's a one of a kind experience.
