  • It’s pretty repetitive, and there’s no real challenge. If you’re looking for a simple visual novel, however, Astrologaster is a good one to get. The humor and aesthetic will automatically put you in a good mood, and your gameplay session may end up being longer than you originally intended.

  • Astrologaster is perhaps the only time you'll ever get to play through a pop-up book version of London's 17th-century medical history. It's an extremely specific pitch, but when it hits, it hits well – and its musical interludes are as delightful and giggle-worthy as any of Shakespeare's best. Sure, it's not going to be to everyone's tastes, but if you're looking for something a little different and you're a fan of the classic British historical sitcom Blackadder, then you could do a lot worse than give this a spin.

  • Despite its lack of real consequences, Astrologaster is a lot of fun to play; the excellent writing and top-notch voice acting really bring this ridiculous concept to life. Yes, it’s a shame the player’s actions don’t make more of a difference, but Astrologaster is still worth going along with – especially if you want a unique look at 16th century London.

  • Overall, Astrologaster is a fun romp through 16th century England. It chose its lane and fully committed to going full farce, turning out to be a very well conceived and interesting game. I enjoyed it, even if I felt at odds with some of the conclusions the game took from dialogue choices.

  • Astrologaster surprised me — I already knew I loved the concept when I purchased the game, but I didn’t know how much I’d love the entire package. The execution was magnificently well done — I highly doubt I’d find a History or Theatre enthusiast who dislikes the title — and delightfully entertaining. From start to finish, Astrologaster delivers; if you enjoy games off the beaten path that so brilliantly achieve all their goals, then our astrological readings indicate you’ll love Astrologaster. It’s in the stars!

  • Astrologaster is not a game that is meant to be rushed through. The moving, paper-doll like characters have small quirks and ticks that you notice in their movements and facial features. The dialogue gives you clues into each of the characters’ personalities and hidden motives. The madrigals are cleverly written and satisfying to listen to in between consultations. Even the calming soundtrack in the background does wonders for immersing the stargazer into Dr. Forman’s world, and adds a calm, soothing aura to the game.

  • If you’re going to play Astrologaster (and you should), you absolutely must play it with headphones. The game casts a spell with its voice work and writing that enhances the bizarre tale of Simon Forman to the point that you might have a hard time putting it down. Forsooth, Astrologaster is a most wondrous invention. Huzzah!

  • Astrologaster has a unique premise, clever presentation, and funny writing. Those elements all work in its favor, but the longer it goes on, the duller it gets. The story fails to make most characters interesting, and the illusion of choice (but without meaningful consequences) creates a sense of futility. It is worth checking out if you want to learn more about Elizabethan history and medicine, but those looking to increase their dosage of compelling narrative experiences should seek treatment elsewhere.

  • I feel the need to personally thank the developer, Nyamyam, for creating Astrologaster. I learned a lot from it, and now want to talk about it with everyone I know because I’ll seem so smart, knowing all about this obscure British man from the 16th century. Not only that, but the game is an experience in its own right, with the madrigals and artwork creating something wonderfully unique. I cannot rave about it enough.

  • Astrologaster is an incredibly original and fantastically designed experience that really captures the feel and tone of the Renaissance. From the impeccably researched astrology diagnoses to the infamous postscript of ‘coitus after consultation’ this is the most accessible way into the world of Simon Forman you could ever hope to find.
