- Astria Ascending will take many gamers back to the heyday of classic RPGs. This is a single-player turn-based game that is easy to grasp, with perhaps not enough challenge for veterans of the genre. But with an entertaining story, great musical score, and pleasing art style, there is plenty of enjoyment to be had for any RPG fan.
Paulmichael Contreras · Nov 08, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Seek out and complete all of the side quests, and you’re looking at well over 50 hours before you’ll see the closing credits. The game may not be compelling enough to warrant a straight play-through, but it’s one you’ll keep coming back to over time…something I didn’t do with Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey.
Kirk Hiner · Oct 28, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Astria Ascending has the ingredients to produce a delicious JRPG dish but fumbles doing so. A chief reason for this is the balancing, and if rectified, I have no doubt it would solve a lot of problems. For starters, grinding is a slog since unlocking a single skill node could take upwards of an hour. The minuscule returns of battles never felt rewarding, making the time I invested feel wasted instead of worthwhile.
FerniWrites · Oct 19, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - While the battle system does the job, it’s the art that all but commands attention. In a word, stunning just doesn’t do it justice; as a sucker for the hand-drawn graphics, it was difficult to progress as I made a point to check out each level meticulously.
Terrence Johnson · Oct 18, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Astria Ascending may not be a flawless release but the solid combat system, spectacular visuals, deep character skill building, and wealth of content make for an experience that JRPG fans will feel right at home with. We’d give this one a recommendation to anybody looking for an original RPG to sink their teeth into; the writing and plot could have done with more development and attention, but there’s lots to love about Astria Ascending and we’re eagerly anticipating whatever Artisan Studios does next.
Mitch Vogel · Oct 12, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I didn’t really click with Astria Ascending, and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s an inability to relate to characters that are functionally immortal, or the hackneyed story, or losing about 60 turns of combat in one dungeon thanks to Omni-Stun. But I found myself fighting to actually boot the game up, which is something I haven’t had from a review in a while.
Donald Theriault · Oct 11, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Astria Ascending's 2D puzzle platforming blended with turn-based combat and stunning art style does all the heavy lifting to keep players interested as the game's writing feels a bit generic.
Cole Martin · Oct 06, 2021 Reviewed on PC, Series X|S, XB1Read full review - Astria Ascending wants to be so many things, and perhaps that’s part of the problem. Instead of trying to be mature or recognizable, it should focus on its unique qualities and develop them into something interesting.
Josh Broadwell · Oct 05, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Astria Ascending is a gorgeous, very ambitious and at the same time flawed experience. It has deep mechanics, but their implementation could have used some more attention. The graphics are as gorgeous as some tracks are memorable, but sometimes they are out of sync. The background story is rich, yet the game fails to use it, making you do to the very same actions in different locations.
Cosmin Vasile · Oct 03, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Astria Ascending’s incredible battle and job systems are perfectly complemented by its gorgeous art and animations, but the rest of this JRPG doesn’t shine nearly as bright. It’s hindered significantly by a bland story, one-note cast, and brutal difficulty spikes throughout. That brings down its otherwise rewarding combat, and makes the journey feel like a chore rather than the exciting start of something new it could have been.
