- We're just going to come right out and say it: Assassin's Creed is fantastic. More to the point, it's beautifully realized, richly detailed and carried by a story with twists that rival the surprises of BioShock. It's also endlessly fun, giving players complete freedom to tear ass across the rooftops and streets of its medieval cities as they track down their targets and try to avoid attracting attention while doing so.
Mikel Reparaz · Oct 10, 2012 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Assassin's Creed is a disappointment, don't get me wrong. It's repetitive and self-contradictory, and a hell of a chore at times. But, even so, it contains some truly incredible moments of gameplay due to its fighting and freerunning mechanics. They aren't implemented in the best way or even used to their full potential, but it's still absurdly fun to get into a sword fight with a dozen baddies and come through unscathed, or to seamlessly run and jump and climb across the Jerusalem landscape.
Anthony Burch · Nov 16, 2007 Reviewed on X360Read full review - As I stated at the beginning of this review, Assassin's Creed should certainly be played by anyone who's taken the jump to the next-generation consoles, but don't expect to be playing something that will go down in history as one of the greatest games of all time. It's ambitious and succeeds more than it fails, giving me hope that one day Ubisoft Montréal will deliver the game they originally set out to make.
Tom Orry · Nov 14, 2007 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - There are few differences between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate, although the 360 version features a little more contrast in the lighting, so it's pretty much a wash. But regardless of which platform you go with, you'll have an amazing and unforgettable game. Assassin's Creed is the kind of game you tell your friends about, and one that should be in your collection.
Kevin VanOrd · Nov 13, 2007 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Assassin's Creed is certainly a must-buy title for gamers interested in following an excellent story. The wonderful visuals play a major role in the experience and easy controls and open level design will suck you right in. This is not a game for everyone and misses a perfect rating due to pacing issues. However, the majority of mature gamers will thoroughly enjoy this title and will once more applaud the creativity, ingenuity, and boldness of the game designers at Ubisoft Montreal. This game will be remembered for implementing a number of innovative elements that will be used in future titles.
Jonathan Marx · Nov 13, 2007 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - There are so many great individual elements, but they are lost among the myriad of poor decisions from Ubisoft Montreal. Wasting the big twist on the first five minutes of gameplay is a tremendous mistake, but not nearly as damaging as the ill-conceived assassination investigation quests, which get old fast. The exploration aspects of Assassin's Creed and the combat are both plusses in my book. But those two elements are only a small part of the whole.
Hilary Goldstein · Nov 13, 2007 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Ironically, despite the amount of criticism I’ve leveled at it, Assassin’s Creed is a game that I recommend everyone play, at least for a short while in order to test the water. Sure, it is a repetitive game, the open combat is tiresome, the dialogue scenes are pretentious vacuums, and when the game freezes you’ll be forgiven for just giving up. Nonetheless it is not a bad game - the graphics are mostly stunning, the platforming aspects are relaxing and enjoyable, and stealth killing is almost as satisfying as I had hoped it would be.
Craig Snow · Jun 17, 2009 Reviewed onRead full review - A vast, believable world to explore freely, a place teeming with life and intoxicating beauty. As an experience, it's undoubtedly a bold, brave and distinctly unique creation - exactly what this generation of consoles has promised from the beginning. In that sense, it's an incredible achievement and one that deserves recognition - we'd even go as far as to suggest Assassin's Creed is an experience everyone should investigate purely to see what's in store for the future of the industry, if only from a presentation and tech perspective.
Matt Wales · Nov 14, 2007 Reviewed on X360Read full review - It's a fitting end to a game that starts off brightly, wriggling elusively as you try and grasp what's going on, delighting in the mechanics and beautiful visuals, before sinking into a pattern that, while fairly gratifying, never evolves and ultimately becomes a bit boring, and quite amazingly repetitive. After each briefing, you travel the same route to the Masyaf border with no way to skip the journey, and it takes five minutes.
