Critic Reviews
- The storyline, presented through comic-like cutscenes, is far from what we would have liked, but does its job to connect what would be only unlinked sea battles otherwise. In conclusion, a game that makes the most of your i-device, is challenging and enjoyable. Recommended.
Peter Warrior · Jul 28, 2014 Reviewed on iOS, And - The ship combat ultimately feels canned and limited by the game’s end, and the story itself doesn’t offer anything rich to latch onto. But even with all that, I do think it succeeds in the mobile sphere, as a casual title, rather than the core title many players will no doubt be expecting. I’m docking points strictly because the franchise as a whole didn’t deliver. But fire this game up during your next voyage… er train ride and you’ll be entertained. But if you do, be warned: you’re in for a shallow ride.
Jason Schneider · Dec 31, 2013 Reviewed on AndRead full review - Assassin’s Creed Pirates is a game of entirely unrealistic combat, a non-existent story and lacklustre free roaming. You can’t even walk around on dry land; instead, your freedom is restricted to the sea. However, that doesn’t stop it from being really fun to play. The combat, however repetitive, is fast-paced and requires skill. What’s more, the maneuverability of the ship, combined with the simplistic controls make for some interesting twists and turns as the battles grow more intense.
Dean Sherwin · Dec 23, 2013 Reviewed on AndRead full review - There’s a massive sense of reward in eking out every resource and collectible from a given region before turning to raze the next, and there’s plenty of opportunity to do it. An unfortunate lack of freedom just makes that return on your time a diminishing one.
Steven Strom · Dec 13, 2013 Reviewed on iOS, AndRead full review - The nautical elements of AC III and Black Flag are arguably the strongest facets of those games, and those themes are rife for exploration in a standalone title. While Assassin's Creed Pirates manages to capture a bit of that sea-faring magic, it never quite delivers the pirate experience I wanted. Unless you're willing to grind through an endless wave of banal ship battles, you're better off sticking to its bigger, better, and much less frustrating console and PC brethren.
Marty Sliva · Dec 12, 2013 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - It is a very attractive game in other respects, though. The ships are well-detailed for a mobile game, and the water and environmental effects are almost on-par with the console versions. It could serve as a subtly striking showpiece for mobile platforms. If only the gameplay were more exciting.
Steve Watts · Dec 12, 2013 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Naturally, it isn’t as attractive as its console cousin, though zoom down to eye level during its majestic sunsets and the shanties belted out by your crew make for a reasonable facsimile of the console game. Repetition ensures Pirates is best saved for brief trips between the Jackdaw’s more varied voyages, though one suspects its publisher wouldn’t want it any other way.
Edge Staff · Dec 11, 2013 Reviewed on iOS - Assassin’s Creed Pirates isn’t some cash in on Assassin’s Creed 4, it is a damn good game that stands right up on its own. It is epic, engaging, and most of all fun. It doesn’t wear out its welcome with bloated mechanics or unnecessary plot. It distills the essence of what we loved about the naval battles and puts it at your fingertips.
Chris Urie · Dec 11, 2013 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - It’s a pity that such a fun, arcade adventure requires grinding so early on, because it serves no other purpose than to hinder progress. Pirates is an enjoyable jaunt played in short bursts, but one that promises a little more than it actually delivers.
Adam Cook · Dec 09, 2013 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Assassin's Creed: Pirates is a very silly game, but it's a great distraction if you're left wanting more after Black Flag. With a host of content, tons of customization and fast-paced combat, there's hardly a dull moment in Pirates. The fact that there's no money-grubbing microtransactions to ruin the experience is the cherry on top.
