- Among Ashes is a great addition to this already stellar year of indie horror. It doesn’t quite reach the highs of titles like Hollowbody, but is an enjoyable dose of horror nostalgia that pulls together a range of approaches to create an identity that feels fresh and unique.

There's a great narrative told between multiple worlds and some genuine scares that are worth experiencing. When you're not sure if the game's got a bug or a feature, you know you're in for the right kind of paranoia.

The trepidation that is arranged here is equally spaced through the entire game and will gladly make every apprehensive step more frantic. Disastrous bugs that can easily happen in a multitude of ways is understandably worrisome, but the experience Among Ashes brings to the table is unmatchable. Among Ashes initiates a grander scale of understanding and effectiveness when it comes to creating new horror games and I hope the ideas that it brought to the table are able to expand in exciting ways in the future.

Considering this is the work of a solo developer, it's hugely impressive and deserves a place amongst 2024's highlights.

A game within a game with an interwoven story hits a lot more than it misses with great puzzles and fantastic sound design. It's just a shame the combat isn't up to par with the rest of the experience.

It may feel dated, clunky and unfriendly to play at times but it transcends that in a way that is so clever, so skilfully written that we can't help but love it.
