  • Aliens vs. Predator hits a shaky equilibrium with carefully planted franchise winks and underwhelming set pieces. But for someone with an inclination for diverse experiences, interesting multiplayer modes, or even the AvP franchise as a whole, the game casts a pretty wide net of appeal. It perhaps isn't ambitious enough in today's age of shooters, nor does it tap into the creative reserves of its rich IP as deeply as we'd like, but as a game that channels entertainment and nostalgia, it capably and enjoyably does its job right.

  • AvP lacks the flare to make it a must have title, but is by no means a bad title, with a solid single player campaign, and an entertaining multiplayer mode. Fans of the intellectual properties will be drawn in by a rich background history, with an abundance of audio diaries expanding on the extensive worlds of the two franchises, but to those not familiar with either species, the game is an enjoyable, if not spectacular, experience.

  • What I have is a single-player mode with some noticeable highlights and a multiplayer mode with too many problems to remain enjoyable, despite all its promise. Rebellion has failed itself. It had everything it needed to make a great game, but let itself down with a mess of technical problems that got in the way of all the fun. It truly is a shame, because I want so badly to love this title, but I simply can't.

  • That's really the largest problem with Aliens vs. Predator. There's no one solid aspect of it to make up for the other, busted-up parts. You're left with the impression that the single-player was an afterthought and that multiplayer was the focus. But even the multiplayer is saddled with enough flaws to make this game missable.

  • Aliens Vs Predator is a great deal of fun, but there's no getting away from the fact that it feels somewhat dated and that the marine campaign is head and shoulders above the other two. A more fleshed out marine campaign and more maps for the survival multiplayer game type would have made for an altogether better experience, but what Rebellion has delivered is still worth taking a look at. This isn't the perfect Aliens or Predator video game, but it does a lot right.

  • This is a mediocre effort in every sense of the word. I almost wish Rebellion had failed more spectacularly; at least there'd be something more to talk about. As it stands, AVP is a FPS that follows most of the conventions of the genre and adds some Aliens, Marines, and Predators to the mix. No matter what your purpose in playing Rebellion's new shooter, there is almost undoubtedly a reason you should be playing a different game. It's not bad, it's just not good.

Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It's there, you can almost feel it, but it's constantly ripped away from you because of some poor design decisions and a general lack of quality that keeps the game from having that triple-A feeling. It's by no means a bad game and will almost certainly please fans more so than either movie effort, but when compared to other first-person shooter titles on the market, the difference is clear.

  • It's the little things that really drag the game down. Aliens vs. Predator seems to be a well-meaning attempt at reinvigorating a languishing series, but grotesque kills and some entertaining multiplayer moments don't cut it--not when so many slick and exciting shooters are on store shelves, vying for your time. The attention to detail, the well-considered level design, and the sense of momentum that characterize the finest shooters are missing here.

  • The game can be finished in some 9 hours, a duration which is slowly becoming standard for the genre. The search for trophies/achievements can add plenty of life to the game for completionists, however. In general, Alien vs Predator is an entertaining game that suffers from a few control and learning curve issues. However, if you learn to ignore the issues and take your time to learn to deal with its peculiarities, Aliens vs Predator can reward you with hours of fun, for both the FPS lovers and the followers of these two film franchises.

  • You won’t be buying AvP for its single-player though, and if you are you may find yourself sorely disappointed. Rebellion has built AvP around its multiplayer, which is both well-constructed and surprisingly well-balanced. Each species comes with its own unique advantages and shortcomings, and will take some time to master, but once you do, AvP rewards in spades.
