  • While not much has changed between this game and the first, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The storyline is more engrossing than ever, and players will always be compelled to push on… for humanities sake, and for the one individual with whom you start to develop a relationship with. But we’ve gone and said too much already. Go and play this game; it’s a sterling example of what a PSN title should be, and we can only expect the next installment in the series, Alien Breed: Descent, to be just as good, if not much better.

  • Developer Team 17 makes great use of Unreal 3's visual capabilities, but a facelift can't change what's inside. Alien Breed 2: Assault stays very close to the roots of the genre, which gives it a touch of old-school charm, but it feels archaic next to newer offerings like Alien Swarm and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

  • Alien Breed 2's major problem is that it feels dated. The gun-play is very simple and there's nothing clever bolted on top to make the game feel fresh. It's a smart looking game, and has some thrilling moments, but these days we expect more from our downloadable titles.

Alien Breed 2 modernizes the top-down, sci-fi shooter, adding ornate graphics and elements of today's popular first-person shooters without losing the charm of its predecessors. It's a small game that feels big while you are playing it, a laudable accomplishment for a $10 title.

  • Ultimately, Alien Breed 2: Assault is a decent addition to the Xbox Live Arcade Lineup. While there isn’t much here in terms of innovation, Assault is a solid isometric shooter that offers fun for fans of the genre or a person looking for a simple shooter with a buddy.

  • Alien Breed 2: Assault is solid, alien-splattering fun, and a real challenge to boot. If you and a friend can see past the harsh difficulty curve and appreciate the more tactical side of alien hunting that this game provides, there are half a dozen hour’s worth of dark, claustrophobic fun to be had.

  • Completing the story mode was all there was to do in the first episode, with a mini campaign to complete with a friend if you wanted. Now you and your friends have reason to return time and time again as you seek to better your survival rates. So Team17 have delivered again. But it leaves the question, where to next? What’s in store for episode 3? Only time will tell...

  • Objectively, it's a visually arresting game, with an excellent twin-stick move-and-aim combat system - but one that settles into a familiar, overly predictable rhythm. For the most part you'll follow endless waypoints, flick a switch here, power up a console there, while gunning down a procession of aliens. If you've played through the first episode, Assault can, at times, feel short on surprises.

About the game

Take control of the hero, Conrad, the ship’s Chief Engineer, and continue your fight for survival across the fatally damaged space vessel, against a ruthless assault by an alien horde. Your only hope relies on reigniting the alien space craft’s monstrous engines to rescue you from impending annihilation. Deep inside the bowels of the unfamiliar craft, and with time rapidly running out, ready your weapons and begin to claw your way through the darkness in a fight for survival. But you are not alone. The ship is home to the carnivorous alien horde and something else ... something yet to reveal its true intentions ... something biding its time. In addition to the thrilling single-player campaign and all new “survivor” modes, the game also offers relentless, action-packed, two-player online co-operative battle modes.
