- Maybe Akimbot will play as a loving exploration of an old favourite for some. For those without rose-tinted glasses, this is a deeply unrewarding experience with a sidekick that needs to be launched into the sun.
AJ Small · Oct 16, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Akimbot is a game that harks back to those glory days of platforming golden years. It’s a homage to games of years gone by, keeping the spirit alive with the gameplay and family-friendly storytelling. The action is fast and furious, but it’s not afraid to slow down at times too; what with some hacking and stealth. Apart from that, Akimbot is an enjoyable romp in a robot world that should well appeal to many.
Gareth Brierley · Sep 29, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Akimbot presents a lot of ideas that don’t significantly learn from or build on the milestones established by the 3D platformers that have come before it — and there are a lot of them to learn from. In the end, it’s a middling, uninspired entry into a genre crowded with bangers, and finds itself in need of both more polished mechanics and a livelier world. My hope is that Evil Raptor will improve on this first effort and expand on Exe’s story in a more realized way.
Lorenzo Mango · Sep 22, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While trying to pay tribute to classic platformers, Akimbot fell short when it came to making its own identity. The main characters weren’t that interesting and the story was predictable, but it did have a couple of strengths. The look of the world and a great soundtrack makes this game an admirable effort, even if it wasn’t successful.
Elena Swan · Sep 10, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Akimbot feels like a blast from the past, but one that hasn't aged all that well. Sure, it's smooth, fast-paced and responsive, and there are some nice setpieces here and there to break up the gameplay — but it's not quite enough to stop it from feeling repetitive and a little long in the tooth.
Kim Snaith · Sep 09, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Akimbot wears its PS2 action-platforming inspiration on its sleeve and it delivers on the experience. The screen tearing issues and foggy environments may push some players aside, if Shipset's quippy dialogue doesn't; but Akimbot's brisk pacing and frenetic action is well worth experiencing regardless.
Igor Chrzanowski · Sep 09, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - I enjoyed my time with Akimbot. It is a charming and surprising lengthy game, with tight controls and a well voiced story. As a diehard Ratchet & Clank fan with no new Ratchet game on the horizon, it was nice to just relax and run around a colorful, platform-y world, and just shoot some bots. However from the visual bugs I kept running into, as well as some key quality of life systems I was missing from current Ratchet & Clank games I found myself wanting more, more often than not.
Mark Kriska · Sep 07, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Overall, Akimbot is a fun platformer that can be expanded upon with a sequel. The weapons are too simple for a sci-fi game like this, but they all feel fantastic to control nonetheless. Some performance issues plague the levels, but Akimbot does surprise with stellar production value and interesting gameplay elements that keep the game feeling fresh. The game does feel long in the tooth by the end, but Akimbot is a good effort by Pumpkin Jack developer Evil Raptor.
