  • Any AK-xolotl fans looking for some couch co-op action will be happy but there might be better rogue-likes out there on PSN for the money.

  • AK-xolotl is a really good little game. There is a decent challenge on offer while the grind is certainly real (buying new weapons seems to cost an arm and a leg, almost literally). That means the urge is there to have just one more run. It isn’t as polished as others, but it feels like the devs are looking to embrace it with new content on a regular basis, so I’m hopeful that over time it will grow and be polished.

  • I enjoyed AK-Xolotl and think it deserves most the same love other games in the genre get. Sure it might be easy to glance over because of how many roguelike/roguelites there are, but at this point surely you’ve done everything there is to do in Enter the Gungeon and want to play something similar, so here’s your chance.

  • AK-xolotl is a twin-stick shooter full of action and personality. What bad can happen from giving cute creatures deadly weapons? It’s amazing how guilty this game made me feel for thinking about sacrificing my baby's happiness to power my character up!

  • The game mechanics are also very simple. You can carry two weapons and you sometimes get abilities that remain during your so-called "run" and you can also buy some permanent ones, although it takes a little too long to acquire these. The game becomes quite tedious in the long run and small doses of gaming were preferred by yours truly but it feels like the possibility to upgrade takes a bit too long.

  • AK-xolotl is a solid action rogue-lite mix that might struggle to stand out. Sure, its protagonist is an axolotl, and you get to save young members of the species but there should have been more weirdness to the world. The combat mechanics are good, with a focus on movement, but I wanted more weapon variety.

  • We love the bullet hell gunplay of AK-Xolotl: its variety of weapons and abilities gives it plenty of depth, and its quirky enemy designs are a joy to come up against. But it’s the additional content here that really sets AK-Xolotl apart. Raising teeny “axolittles” will warm your heart – and sucking out their happiness will break it. But it’s all part of the eccentric wonder that is AK-Xolotl, which has quickly become one of our favourite roguelike games.

  • Maybe AK-xolotl was rushed to market, or maybe its developer is already moving onward to the next game. What’s left is a fun but underweight action-roguelite that could have used slightly more polish and a lot more content for the asking price. Start to credits should run most players five hours or so, which is a low number for a generally challenging genre which all but requires a set of meaningful post-game mechanics. These are the lacking fundamentals which leave AK-xolotl looking like a hungry creature in search of a better habitat.

  • AK-xolotl is a must-play if you’re a fan of roguelikes and bullet hells. Its various enemies offer interesting attacks and are distinct enough that you can customize effective defensive strategies against them with a range of weapons and abilities. However, some of the runs can get quite repetitive.
