- A relatively enjoyable Metroidvania that is still noticeably rough around the edges.
Dom Kim · Feb 29, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Afterimage feels like a very well-crafted Metroidvania with spectacular vistas, solid combat, and deep character progression system. The only minor issues, like the colliding damage, that I had with the game are just design choices that probably can’t be addressed.
Cosmin Vasile · Jun 25, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Afterimage delivers a solid 2D Metroidvania experience. With its vague story, it’s clear that Afterimage focuses more on delivering a stellar visual performance and fun gameplay. The big problem, however, is that the game doesn’t do anything groundbreaking and ends up becoming one of the many games available in its genre. Gamers who are looking for a basic yet solid Metroidvania will have a good time, but those looking for something unique that switches up the status quo will be left disappointed.
Wirotaboto · Jun 24, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Afterimage is a Metroidvania with attractive 2D visuals and crisp combat, and it really wants to make sure you’ve earned any victories you get. The action is tricky, especially with the numerous bosses that are smarter than what you may be used to. But if you’re up to the challenge, you’ll find the game’s rewards.
Kirk Hiner · Jun 02, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It offers you the chance to visit a ton of interesting destinations. But, getting to them can feel like waiting through a long TSA line only to find out you're missing essential paperwork. Yeah, I want to see Naples, but maybe not that bad.
Andrew King · May 10, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - With a more than 26-hour runtime, Afterimage kept me hooked to my seat as I ventured through the beautiful world with elegantly designed creatures and battles everywhere I turned. For the price of entry — Afterimage is one of the best Metroidvanias I have personally ever played.
Gordon Bicker · May 03, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Afterimage is the sum of many parts. Its story has me stumped, with confusing plot beats and haphazard character interactions that will have you scratching your head from beginning to end. Still, its presentation and design will likely be what initially got you interested, and it will be what keeps you playing. The combat also provides some depth to the adventure, but it becomes a bit messy due to the strange enemy behavior and lack of challenge. Regardless, I hope this isn’t the last we’ll see of this beautiful world.
Orpheus Joshua · Apr 25, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Afterimage may not do anything particularly new, but it does many things quite well. If players are looking to play a new Metroidvania while waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong, Afterimage captures some of the best elements that the genre has to offer.
BEN BROSOFSKY · Apr 25, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While we did grow a little weary of the overwhelming amount to explore and backtrack through in Afterimage, we didn’t grow tired of whacking its wide range of enemies, nor did its gorgeously hand-drawn environments — which Switch unfortunately struggles to do justice to when docked — ever disappoint. It's best experienced elsewhere if you're playing on a television, but if you primarily play your Switch handheld, Afterimage offers a lengthy, lovely-looking Metroidvania adventure.
Lowell Bell · Apr 25, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Afterimage will undoubtedly have its fans since the game has figured out the hard parts—gorgeous art, snappy combat, and a sprawling, detailed world. Sadly the game stumbles on the boring parts—tutorials, equipment screens, and general UX design—which creates a frustrating experience for anyone that doesn’t quite ‘get’ it on the first try.
