  • This is an extremely impressive port of an excellent flight combat game. I was surprised when this was announced for Switch, but have absolutely loved every moment of revisiting it. The unique mechanics of Ace Combat 7 are still a thrill five years after its original release, and they have been translated effectively here. Throw in an over-the-top but engaging story and a fantastic soundtrack, and you’ve got something special. Mission structure can get a little repetitive by the late game, but plenty of unlocks keep the experience pretty fresh the whole way through. Given the general lack of many Ace Combat games on Nintendo platforms, I’ll also note that you by no means need to have played the rest of the series to enjoy this one. This is an easy recommendation and a great late generation addition to any list of remarkable Switch ports.

  • The content is plentiful, replayability remains high, and the presentation easily makes Ace Combat 7 one of the better arcade-style flight games on the PC. It has been a long time coming, but action flight fans and those who love the series won't be disappointed by Ace Combat 7.

  • By the end of the campaign, I was very happy with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. It may fall a bit short of replacing The Unsung War as my series favorite, but it came quite close. Fans should be over the moon (jets can’t go there, please don’t try to actually fly over the moon) with how the series manages to find its roots while still changing things up, and newcomers have a very solid entry point for the series. Here’s hoping we won’t be waiting nearly ten years for the next one.

  • Ace Combat 7 is a no brainer for fans of the series and flight simulators. Though not a realistic flight simulator the game play is fun and, let’s be honest, we just don’t get a ton of flight games anymore. There probably isn’t enough here to bring new fans over that haven’t played the series in the past due to outdated graphics and some features missing from prior releases.

  • Ace Combat 7 is an excellent return to what the series is known and loved for. The campaign, while lacking the branches of previous games, is a great story, and manages to deliver that anime cheese factor while still being poignant. The game looks absolutely amazing, and if you’re a fan of airplanes, you’ll enjoy seeing how lovingly rendered they are for this game.

  • Flight combat games are meant to offer close approximations to the feeling of being in a tense dogfight miles above the earth's surface, and once again, Ace Combat does not disappoint. The game's PSVR missions are particularly good in this regard; so good, in fact, that they even manage to outshine the considerably polished traditional gameplay mode.

  • It pulls you in right away with a nice balance between arcade action and detailed realism, and the core dogfighting experience is consistently enjoyable. Plus, if you’ve got a PSVR this is a must-play, with a level of immersion that you’d need a real airplane – or maybe one of those military training simulators – to match. Strap yourself in, rookie, because Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is a wild ride.

  • All in all, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown offers something for everyone, and you don’t need to have played any of the previous games to enjoy the “danger zone” action. This game satisfied so many of my childhood dreams that it will always have a special place in my heart. My only regret was that I don’t have the Top Gun or Iron Eagle soundtracks playing while I took to the skies. Yet.

  • Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the best entry in the series yet and provides a near-perfect blend of action and strategy. Those looking for something to fill the void of the long-gone After Burner series will like the quicker pace offered here. Longtime AC vets will love the quicker pace and increase on craft customization. Dogfights are a rewarding challenge and every part of the presentation is impressive. Its graphics are the best ever seen for a flight-based game and the soundtrack is outstanding too.

  • Ace Combat 7 is the first true Ace Combat game in 12 years, and despite some notable flaws, those flaws are the mark of a team trying new things while still retaining what fans love and what newcomers will be sure to embrace. No matter how hard it beats you down, it is impossible to stay mad at this game for very long.
