  • All in all, the gameplay on offer is pretty good. I do have to say that you will suffer many unfair deaths, but then again, you did in the original. There is also very little variation in the standard gameplay, but what is there has been implemented very well – and most importantly it’s fun to play. At a price point of just £4.49 from the Nintendo eShop it offers good value for money and is certainly worth downloading, especially if you were a fan of the original game.

Thunder Blade is well done arcade port with lots of options that help to modernize the experience. Like most other old arcade games, personal interest is really what drives the game’s value. For players who either remember the arcade original or simply enjoy the style, it’s definitely worth checking out.

  • If you’ve been ignoring Thunder Blade for the past quarter-century, it’s time to take notice. 3D Thunder Blade is not just a great arcade port- it’s one of the best pick-up-and-play action games on the 3DS.

  • Those nostalgic for an old-school shmup with a few twists that have $5.99 just collecting dust could do worse than 3D Thunder Blade. It’s fun, it’s mindless, and if you really hate it, it’s over in about ten minutes. In fact, that’s the game’s biggest problem; there just isn’t a whole lot here. M2 has added in an extra mode, but that’s about it. Unless you’re a score-hunter, it could be difficult to get the most bang for your buck.

  • Although slower-paced than the likes of After Burner, and less flashy at first glance, 3D Thunder Blade offers a more varied selection of environments and more visual details making the setting of the game more visually appealing, if not by the sensations it provides.

  • Coming to a suitable conclusion on 3D Thunder Blade is a difficult proposition; on one hand it's clearly the best of the 3D Classics on a technical level, but on the other hand the source material wasn't a particularly top-notch game to begin with. Beautiful graphics can't elevate average gameplay and the overall replay value is limited. There will be fans of the arcade original who will really love this conversion and if that person is you, it's everything you could ever want from a handheld Thunder Blade.

About the game

In 3D Thunder Blade, players control a helicopter and use guns and missiles to destroy enemy vehicles while flying between buildings, through caves, and into enemy bases. The re-mastered version boasts stereoscopic 3D visuals and adds a host of new features. Some of the additional features include: gyro controls, adjustable difficulty settings, Circle Pad Pro support, and a load of options that recreate the look and feel of the original arcade machine. Replay saving and stage select are also available! 3D Thunder Blade also introduces brand new remixes of the original in-game music that can be toggled ‘on’ and ‘off’ and an unlockable Special Mode with updated gameplay, new enemies, and a more powerful fighter.
