  • This really should have been a launch game, no question. But it's here now, and must surely mark a turning point for the system. Mario Kart 7 sets the graphical bar so high, it doesn't even look like a 3DS game, which means everyone else has a new standard to follow. Suddenly the platform feels new again.

  • Evolutionary rather than revolutionary, Mario Kart 7 amounts to become the best in the series, if still not perfect. As with Super Mario 3D Land, it’s glaringly obvious that if these games were available at launch the Nintendo 3DS would have perhaps fared far better during its earlier months. Let’s just hope, as Nintendo are surely doing to, that it is enough to significantly aid the handheld both during and beyond the Christmas period.

  • Mario Kart 7 comes to the 3DS with a bang. Nintendo has shown that they continue to make great games on their newest handheld system. From the great graphics, solid sound, to the even better gameplay, both offline and online, this game just displays quality from start to finish. Sure, there is some rubber band like AI features that may drive you nuts now and then, but in the end the addictiveness of this game will keep fans of the series and newbies alike coming back for more.

  • Mario Kart 7 isn't a drastic departure from the series. However, it improves upon many of the facets we first saw in Mario Kart Wii, and includes enough new content and features to make it worth your while. It might be tempting to skip this one and wait for the inevitable Wii U Mario Kart, but any true Nintendo fan would be remiss to miss this one. Mario Kart 7 is a great game and one that should definitely be on the Christmas lists of 3DS owners this year.

  • From a racing perspective, this is the best entry yet in the long-running series, and excellent track design pushes you to be inventive and smart in how you drive. However, the online structure has a few notable issues, and the removal of the mission mode is a big disappointment. Despite some problems, Mario Kart 7 is another explosive entry in the franchise.

Nintendo may have taken its time producing the game – when doesn’t it? – but never has the wait for a new Mario Kart been so worth it.

  • The winning formula has been prodded and poked and buffed until it gleams, leaving us with a game that is, at the very least, the finest Mario Kart since the original.

  • It doesn't turn kart racing on its end, but it finds a near-perfect medium of similarity and discovery as it walks the fine line of risk and reward without spinning out.

  • It being an unadventurous and predictable retread, however, is only half of Mario Kart 7's problem. The other half is the fact that it's a lethargic and mundane game, easily outpaced by games that could be considered knock-offs of the formula Nintendo itself perfected. Mario Kart is in need of a severe shake up. This stagnant, crawling, and indolent effort is not it.

Mario Kart 7 marks yet another return to Nintendo's kart-racing franchise. Though the character roster should have been larger, and a cheap blue shell can still screw up an otherwise perfect race, MK7 still offers enough innovation to keep this old formula feeling fresh.
