PUBG is a shooter that’s as invested in creating a smart, nuanced survival experience as it is fun, action-packed combat.

  • All of this is not to say that PUBG on PS4 isn’t fun, as it’s definitely a serviceable experience for Battle Royale aficionados who want a more strategic and deliberately paced alternative to competitors like Fortnite and Black Ops 4‘s Blackout. Unfortunately, though, there are still a host of problems that PUBG Corp. needs to address so as to justify the PlayStation 4 port’s $30 price tag.

  • There is a whole generation of PS4 owners who are probably way too deep into Fortnite, with that game being their first exposure to the genre. While I wouldn’t count myself amongst them, I cannot imagine that any of those people would choose this $30 experience, with little promise to grow and improve, over triple-A titles that have since leapfrogged over PUBG.

  • In the face of quicker, louder rivals, PUBG offers a slow and meditative experience. It’s not, I would imagine, unlike sitting in a deer blind waiting for an unlucky whitetail to pass below. While PUBG’s technical issues are ever-present, they rarely spoil this core experience. This is a buggy game, but they aren’t game breaking bugs.

  • PUBG is a fun game for PS4 players looking for a break from Fortnite but they’ll have to deal with a lot of technical issues in order to get the most out of it.

  • In a time where Battle Royale is all the craze, raking in all that money and not bothering to try to keep up with your competition seems like a stupid idea. Considering PUBG creators sued Epic Games over Fortnite over plagiarism, it becomes pretty apparent that the suit wasn’t over losing money, but out of spite that someone else was making a better version of your game.

  • There is a certain charm to PUBG‘s gameplay that keeps players coming back for more. From the strong map design to the enjoyable gunplay, there is enough different here to make it worthwhile for PS4 players even if they’ve spent hundreds of hours in Fortnite. You just might have to have an abnormally high tolerance for bugs to fully enjoy it.

  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds manages to differentiate itself from its battle royale progeny with its more tactical spin on the formula, even with its obvious lack of presentational prowess. While its grounded approach can be brutal at first, if you take the time to immerse yourself in its stress inducing battles, you’ll find yourself involved in epic engagements that will have you sharing your successes – and failures – with anyone willing to listen.

  • While slightly late on arrival, PUBG on PS4 provides an excellent battle royale experience marred by some ugly visuals and technical issues, but look beyond its grainy exterior and there's something special here.

PUBG v1.0 on Xbox One runs smoothly, features three vastly different maps, and includes a ton of weapons, gear, and items to use in the deadliest online game. Its unique brand of tense, realistic shooting mixed with slow-paced tactical combat manages to stay fresh and exciting even after hundreds of matches. It makes coming back for another attempt at a “chicken dinner” victory hard to resist.

About the game

Our BATTLE ROYALE game-mode will put up to 100 players on a remote island for a winner-takes-allshowdown where strategic gameplay is as important as shooting skills. Players will enter a last-man-standing battle where they try to locate weapons, vehicles and supplies in a graphically and tactically rich battleground that eventually forces players into a shrinking play zone as they engage in a tense and spectacular fight to the death.
