  • Yomawari: Midnight Shadows  is a game perfect for fans of various genres. Fans of the original will find a perfectly executed sequel which improves on the first while maintaining the mood. But fans of horror, story driven games, exploration and adventure will find something to enjoy here too. If any of this sounds good to you give Yomawari: Midnight Shadows a try. It’s sure not to disappoint.

  • One of the things that took me by surprise with Night Alone is how the game stayed with me after it was done, getting better in memory than it actually was to play thanks to a story that made the rough parts worth fighting through.  Yomawari: Midnight Shadows clears those issues away and looks good doing it, effortlessly turning a quirky one-off into one of the best new horror series in a long time.

  • Yomawari: Midnight Shadows doesn’t do a whole lot to stand out from its predecessor. However, it really doesn’t need to. It’s still an excellent horror game that will keep your blood pumping from start to finish. The lush and haunting hand-drawn visuals feel like a loving cross between htoLNiQ: The Firefly Diary and Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. And the story, while simple, still manages to make you feel for its young protagonists. Simply put, if you liked the original game, then you’re bound to enjoy every bloodcurdling moment of this sequel. When all is said and done, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is a ghoulish Halloween treat from Nippon Ichi Software that no survival horror fans should miss.

  • Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is a cute-looking survival horror game, with unexpected twists and a surprisingly dark narrative. The same unintuitive control scheme seen before can hinder the experience somewhat, but gamers familiar with those issues from the original Vita release should adapt in no time. The port over to the PS4 means that taking in the hand-drawn visuals is a treat, while loading times have also been almost eliminated altogether. Coupled with unsettling audio work, the ambiance is on point for giving a few scares. Check out Yomawari: Midnight Shadows, crank up the volume, and get ready for a thriller, just in time for Halloween.

  • Yomawari: Midnight Shadows has everything a horror game needs, engaging story and characters, creepy town, and scary spirits. Most importantly, it shows a significant improvement over what the previous entry in the series offered. Sadly, the game lacks more explorable areas and also a more extensive variety of enemies, who end up overstaying their welcome in the later parts of the game. With that said, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows caused me to scream out of fear multiple times and, at the same time, kept me excited for whatever was coming next.

  • In many ways, Midnight Shadows is the definitive Yomawari experience for anyone seeking a slightly fresher take on a survival horror game. Nippon Ichi Software continues its streak for scarily merging the cute with the creepy as evidenced in games like Night Alone, A Rose in the Twilight, and now this, while also iterating just enough on the previous game’s formula to not hinder the format too much and even flesh it out.

  • It was fascinating being able to observe the fate of two different girls and see the plight from their individual perspectives. The visual and audio design shine brightly in this bleak journey that never breaks from its ambiance and distressing frame of mind. This carries all the way through to the ending which sets a somber mood. So if you’re looking for a frightening adventure that subverts your assumptions, and if you can get around the checkpoint system, the unnerving atmosphere of Yomawari: Midnight Shadows may do you in.

  • With just a few minor annoyances aside, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is another solid horror title from Nippon Ichi. It will be interesting to see where the series is headed, as there is so much space for it to grow and develop.

  • There's an important distinction between fear and dread, one that often gets lost in modern horror games - a reliance on the cheap jump scare, the momentary shock instead of the fear that the player will carry with them long after the game has ended.

  • It’s been hard to find horror games that scratch my itch to be disturbed without catching me with cheap scares or leaving me with weeks of nightmares. I long for tense, atmospheric experiences that get me shivering and shaken and Yomawari: Midnight Shadows shook me to my core. It’s a masterful horror game that tops anything else on the Vita, and rivals many other things on the PS4 as it blends detailed sound-design with rich art and a somber narrative to craft a breath-taking horror experience.
