  • GREAT Kingdom Come: Deliverance has finally escaped the shackles of being restricted to last-generation console performance thanks to its new upgrades.

  • Historical realism and a unique premise when marketing that to players can only carry the game so far, and with every passing hour the constant inconsistencies, graphical issues, and oddball game mechanics become problematic to the overall experience. There is a good game in Kingdom Come, and it does shine through at times, but often it is an exercise of tedium to overcome its flaws. For players willing to push through those flaws though, Kingdom Come is a game worth trying for yourself.

  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance satisfies that itch if you are looking for something a little different than typical western high fantasy or Japanese style RPGs. It's rough around the edges and some narrative & mechanical quirks don't always hit their mark, but it's still an enjoyable experience if you can put up with a little bit of uneveness.

  • Despite all the problems I listed above, Kingdom Come: Deliverance isn’t actually a bad game. It’s quite fun and will definitely appeal to medieval history buffs and/or those who are big into RPGs. If you can push past the first few hours you’ll start getting used to the way things are and it only really takes off from there. Do you want to be a noble knight or a scoundrel? Do you want the villagers to love or hate you? Will you kill those who surrender to you or let them live? It’s all up to you. You have a lot of choice and while a lot of things aren’t great in this game, they’re not awful either. The story is compelling enough and the progress is real.

  • While I have come out of Kingdom Come: Deliverance somewhat disappointed, Warhorse Studios still did deliver on their original KickStarter promise of creating a realistic RPG unlike any other. While the developers did squeeze as much potential as their studio could out of this concept, to sometimes remarkable results, Kingdom Come: Deliverance may have been a tad too bit ambitious for them on a technical level, and it really shows.

  • A lot of this may be down to my hardware, but it’s the same hardware which provided a perfectly playable experience in Assassin’s Creed Origins, one of the most demanding games around. If there’s the slightest doubt that your PC is going to struggle to run Kingdom Come: Deliverance at playable frame rates then I have to recommend you take a wait and see approach in order to see how it’s patched over the coming months.

  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a fantastic and absolutely frustrating experience. I was treated to a memorable lead character whose agency and development was largely wiped away with a twist late in the game and a collection of incredible gameplay mechanics and quests repeatedly stifled by bugs. Despite its downfalls, though, the good parts of the game are so good.

  • But you know what they say, revenge is a messy business. Beneath Kingdom Come: Deliverance‘s many bumps and bruises, there’s a gripping tale to be told. Here’s hoping Warhorse Studio can iron out the kinks down the road. As it stands, this is one fun but flawed journey that will test both your skills and your patience.

  • Ultimately, Kingdom Come feels a bit like homework. If the historical setting and focus on realism appeal to you, then the deep gameplay systems and methodical pace are worth learning. If you'd rather be a magic-wielding wizard or the unequivocal hero, on the other hand, the source material will bore you almost instantly.

Had I not been reviewing the game, I would have quit after only a couple hours and counted my losses. I respect new ideas and takes on genres, lord knows we need some fresh blood, but not at the cost of actual enjoyment. There are a billion other fantasy RPGs out there, and most of them I found much more enjoyable than Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

About the game

Kingdom Come: Deliverance will utilize a classless role-playing game system, allowing players to customize their skills to take on roles such as a warrior, bard, thief or something in between. Abilities and stats will grow depending on what the player does and says through branched dialogue trees. During conversations the time a player takes to make a decision is limited and will have an effect on their relationships with others. Reputation will be based on player choices and will carry consequences.
Developer: Warhorse Studios
