  • While the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren’t perfect, they’re certainly the best and most convenient ways to play these classic games. The soundtracks are lovingly orchestrated and the pixel art is gorgeous, though the latter does lose some detail in the translation. Each game feels great to play, but I do wish extra content from previous releases or remakes had been included.

  • Sadly, the gameplay is what makes these games feel dated, limited, and somewhat annoying at times. These games are mainly nice to try out if you want to learn more about the history of RPGs and the Final Fantasy franchise. Those who expect the same comfort as they would from modern RPGs may be in for a slightly rougher ride than anticipated.

  • The first three Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are a somewhat solid remastering effort that could have been so much better with a few tweaks. While the amazing rearranged soundtracks sound great and the balancing tweaks make the three games still feel great to play, the divisive overhauled visuals reminiscent of the 16-bit entries, technical issues like the lack of a V-Sync toggle and display settings not saving and lack of additional content found in prior remakes make these remasters a truly worthy purchase only for those who live and breathe Final Fantasy.

  • On the whole, Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster is still a good game with great music and a sense of exploration, which is enhanced by the art of the remastered version, but shows its age through its gameplay, story and characters.

  • Overall, Final Fantasy: Pixel Remaster is a slight disappointment. It isn't a terrible port, but it feels half-hearted. For a game remade and remastered as often as Final Fantasy, it's easy to compare this release to the others and realize that it doesn't have a ton going for it. The updated visuals are nice, and the remastered music is excellent, but otherwise, it's a slightly easier and slightly more user-friendly version of the original NES game. Choose Final Fantasy: Pixel Remaster if you can't play one of the many other versions that have more content.

  • Overall, the changes found in Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster improve the graphics of several 30-year-old games, bringing them up to the modern standard set by pixelated throwbacks. The new music also helps bring each game to life in ways that these classics haven't been able to achieve in many of the older versions up until now. However, several UI and quality-of-life changes rob each game of some of their individuality and the draw to explore their worlds and the depths of their combat.

  • If this is your first experience with the game, I think you’ll find the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster version to be quite a worthy purchase. It feels its age in terms of story and themes, but it remains a solid RPG with some great beats. The results of turning in that particular item to Bahamut still gets me pumped to this day, and the initial sequence leading up to the bridge feels like the perfect way to kick off an adventure.

  • I come away from Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3 looking forward to the remaining games more than I did before. I appreciate the new features like the enhanced bestiary, the auto-combat feature, making grinding friendlier, and I LOVE the new soundtracks. But I hope they manage to address issues like the screen tearing and especially the font before the last three games release.

  • Overall, between the game’s story and gameplay, nothing sticks out as individually exceptional. Still, Final Fantasy comes together as an experience that is better than the sum of its parts. The Pixel Remaster does an excellent job of keeping the surprisingly well-aged gameplay that started the series intact while updating it with more modern pixel art and a beautiful soundtrack.

  • Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a great way to experience the first entry in one of gaming’s biggest franchises. Compared to more recent Final Fantasy games this one is simple; the story is interesting but it’s not the dramatic saga seen in subsequent games. But as much as the epic storytelling has made more recent Final Fantasy games great, the simplistic approach to this is part of what makes it so timeless, even though none of that was intentional.
