  • As a game, this can be huge and intimidating, but it can also be someone’s comfort game to melt into at the end of a long day. As a port, Digimon World: Next Order should be praised for its continuous improvement as it jumps from one platform to the next, but its pricetag hasn’t improved in its 7 year run, which can put off some players who have become accustomed to purchasing ports at a lower pricepoint.

The game turns into a fight simulator, where players can pan the camera for better views but that’s pretty much it. After a battle XP is earned and items that will help to rebuild the town that players are tasked with completing. This new version of the game adds this mostly useless open world and a lot of filler which comes way of requiring tons and tons of grinding.

  • Digimon World: Next Order is nowhere near as good, fun, engaging or memorable as these other titles. Sure, it might be a love letter to a PS1 classic (?), but there’s a reason as to why not a single other Digimon World besides that first game had Tamagotchi-based gameplay, it just wasn’t fun. Digimon World: Next Order isn’t fun either. A grindy, monotonous patience test, just ignore this one. Even if the fact you can make your monsters poop sounds too enticing to be ignored.

  • Digimon World Next Order feels and plays fantastically on the Nintendo Switch. But unfortunately, it relies on you being familiar with its established gameplay mechanics, which can be daunting for newcomers.

  • Next Order is still just a slightly enhanced port of a Vita game from 2006. A sprint button is a useful addition, and character models look impressive enough, but areas can be small and sparse, animations look incredibly stiff, and each area is broken up with loading screens to make zipping around Floatia feel more awkward than it should.

  • Next Order isn’t without flaws, but it's exactly the kind of game the Digimon World series needed after a regional hiatus. While the unconventional combat and grind-heavy skill training aren’t likely to deter fans of the franchise, newcomers might find some of the game's quirks unwelcoming. As such, Digimon World: Next Order likely won’t appeal to everyone, but the game is something longtime fans of the series will have no problem dumping hours upon hours into.

  • This combination of virtual pet, battle simulation, and story line work together to promote one another’s strengths pushing the player to continue to develop their Digimon and their city to get the most out of this game. For Digimon fans, this is a game that you won’t want to miss and a great starting point for anyone interested in the franchise.

  • Digimon World: Next Order is a different breed of RPG in a pretty stagnant genre, and for what it tries and does to bring this old favourite to modern times, I have to commend it somewhat. But what it does is in places archaic, or not explained well enough to be managed properly without a guide.

  • Overall, Digimon World: Next Order caters to fans of the franchise and does a good job in replicating what being a Digimon trainer does. The gameplay is unique and a bit more hands-off than most people expect, and while intriguing, it at times can feel more like a chore than playing a game.

  • Next Order, much like other games in the Digimon World series, is unabashedly complex. In spite its dated looks and seemingly un-involved combat system, the game’s multitude of mechanics and systems definitely give the game a depth that isn’t instantly obvious on the surface.
