  • There’s nothing like Zombi when it comes to its survival elements, actually ensuring a sense of dread and tension for every step forward, until you get to its archaic and clumsy gameplay design. Actually engaging with enemies feels unwieldy and quickly becomes repetitive. Even the port quality is at odds with itself as Straight Right has created an unstable slog that, while still playable, can be frustrating to get through. Spotty performance, a terribly boring aesthetic and a messy, cobbled together combat system amounts to something that had potential, but was beaten over the head with a cricket bat.

  • Zombi would be a tough sell at anything higher than its current asking price of $20. With a playtime of 6-8 hours including modest exploration, and three barely disparate endings that don’t feel like much of an emotional payoff, I can only recommend Zombi to hardcore zombie game fans.

  • ZombiU no doubt benefited from its iconic approach . It's easier for a zombie game to stand out on a system that has very few games focused on horror, survival, the undead, or even first-person shooting. With the jump to other platforms, Zombi is going toe-to-toe with a lot of other games that could appeal to the same audience. Still, Zombi manages to set itself apart, with its deliberate pacing, desolate atmosphere, and focus on survival. It might not be a Crown Jewel, but this undead romp through London is an interesting change of pace.

Zombi was a stealth release. It just came out of nowhere with little announcement. The beauty part is that many folks never got to experience this on the Wii U and the port has been done fairly well. It might not have huge improvements, but it runs at a solid 30 fps most the time with a resolution increase, some added weapons, and FOV change.

  • Visually, Zombi's models are crude, the animation isn't great, and it has an overly muddy and bland color scheme, but the levels are generally well-designed and the environments and set dressing are detailed and evocative. Except for a choice of resolution, brightness, and FOV, there are no advanced video settings to speak of, and all of the audio—SFX, ambiance, music, voice—is tied to a single volume slider. ...it's a fun and scary survival horror game, but being killed by zombies should happen more frequently than being killed by glitches.

Zombi is the textbook example of a game that needs a sequel. Within the trope-ripe grounds of the zombie shooter, it builds interesting NPCs, delivers genuine scares, and makes deaths mean something more than a respawn. With more exciting combat, Zombi might have been a must-own for horror fans. As it stands, it’s a fun game that does most things right, but constantly reminds you of its biggest flaw.

  • Zombi is an accomplished horror game that manages to make zombies scary in a medium where they’ve been overused to the point of boredom. That’s an astounding achievement, and it’s why this game still feels fresh three years after its original incarnation.

  • Considering the effort gone into the environment design it's a shame more wasn't done to spruce the textures up. Modelling is also distinctly last-gen, although the lighting and effects help hide this behind a wonderfully eerie atmosphere. ...Given the lack of meaningful changes for the better, the original game still delivers the best experience, even if the new-gen game looks and performs marginally better.

  • Ultimately, this was a wasted opportunity to polish and refine a solid Wii U title that brought a fresh perspective to the genre on release, but is showing its age now. It looks and feels like a last-gen game shoehorned onto new platforms in a lazy port. It’s a poor survival horror game when the erratic control scheme is the most terrifying thing about it.

  • Overall, Zombi U is a game that successfully utilizes the Wii U’s GamePad features, provides a spooky atmosphere, and has some innovative elements that make it a worthy purchase for many. Unfortunately, the combat is not as refined as it could be and I found the gameplay somewhat tedious. Not to mention Zombi U is not as visually polished as it could be.

    About the game

London is falling. Are you prepared? The Last Blight is upon us. It was foretold. For the second time in history, a great plague has shrouded London in a fog of death. Big Ben tolls as thousands of unprepared die, or worse, are infected by a sickness more gruesome than death. You’re still breathing, for now, but how long will you survive the labyrinth of London’s streets and underground canals, abandoned by the outside world and surrounded by infected? The horrifying remains of humanity, ravaged by the terrifying disease, are shuffling through the streets, waiting at every turn to prey on your living flesh.
