Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z does a disservice to the franchise by having its name attached. I wanted to love it, but it just kept making me despise its design. Anyone interested in this title should steer clear. There is little here to redeem its many problems, and what it flaunts as its bullet points are hardly worth sticking around for.

  • Yaiba is not technically stainless steel (get it?), as I experienced a number of glitches during my playthrough. Far too often the camera would zoom in way too far when I was in combat, allowing me to see only a small percentage of the battlefield. Framerate issues can occur when there are too many enemies on the screen as well.

  • Combat, though it does have its nuances, can be tedious and even starts to become unenjoyable. Visually, the game is also a step back for a series which has seen a worrying decline in quality over the past few years. Put bluntly, if you’re hankering for some Ninja Gaiden, then the recent Vita ports are your best option.

  • Overall, I can’t think of any way that Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z could have been worse. Yaiba himself came off as a knock off Deadpool but without any of the likeability or a back story, while the other characters are pretty much everything wrong with video game characters. The game play was boring at best and rage inducing at worst. The ‘jokes’ throughout the game aren’t funny and detract from the actual pretty good art of the game while the music just adds to the headache that playing this will bring you.

  • Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is an affront to all good taste. When it comes to the gaudy aesthetics, that’s mostly a good thing, but it doesn’t work so well for the gameplay. If Ninja Gaiden 3 left a black mark on the series, Yaiba dumps a bucket of black paint all over it. It’s little wonder Tecmo Koei downplayed the franchise name when giving Yaiba its title.

  • Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is a dismal waste of a good idea. Painfully unfunny, graphically abhorrent, and straight-up disheveled in the combat department, this manages to be one of the worst games of the last generation, right at the very end of it.

  • Everything Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden does, other games have come before it and done better. This title feels like it should be a twenty-dollar downloadable game, but Tecmo Koei asks what fans it has left to shell out a full sixty dollars for this heap. If you're looking for some stylish action, go play Devil May Cry 3 or 4 and send this undead cyborg back to the scrapyard.

  • You don't have to actually enjoy misery and pain to pick up Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, but it helps. When the difficulty isn't making you cry like a little girl, the terrible jokes and uneven gameplay probably will be. If you're the sort of person that enjoys a challenge and doesn't mind overlooking a few rustier moments, buy a box of super absorbent tissues and give this a go.

  • Regrettably, sadly, unfortunately, good technical aspects cannot be this game’s saving grace. There are some redeeming elements to Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, but the wanton stupidity unleashed on us through the writing and game concept sorta mar it all. Mucks it all up into a zombified, goopy, irreverent pointless ninja-starred mess.

  • Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z knows it's a stupid, flashy arcade action game, and rolls with it. It doesn't try to be clever or witty, or even ironic and self-effacing. It's not deep or customizable, and it's clearly running out of ideas past the halfway point. It isn't perfect. To some people, it won't even be considered good.

Step into a living comic book in this new take on the Ninja Gaiden series. Brandishing his ninja sword and the mecha weapons in his cyber arm, Yaiba slaughters zombies with brutal, over-the-top abandon. Will you slice enemies to pieces, crush them with Yaiba's cyborg arm or just rip off a zombie’s arms to use as nunchucks?
