- In the end, even with a decent amount of time to invest yourself into it, most of the feelings you’ll get by experiencing Xenon Valkyrie+ will be frustration and disappointment.Xenon Valkyrie+ isn’t that bad, but what buries it once and for all is the fact that there are much better roguelikes worthy of your time.
Iyane Agossah · Feb 12, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Xenon Valkyrie is at odds with its own design. Exploring the stages is fun, but all that fun starts to melt away when you realize just how little freedom you have to experiment with different character builds. The level up system is simply is not balanced enough to match the rest of the game’s mechanics. It’s just too frustrating to play Xenon Valkyrie. While you can probably figure out the exact way to optimize characters in order to beat bosses with ease, I can’t really see a reason you’d want to.
Matthew Zawodniak · Dec 31, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you like a challenge, you will certainly find your fill here, but the best types of hard games put the failures on you. Here, too often it feels as though your failure was as random as the level design / item placement / enemies / everything else. Fun in short bursts, but not one to spend hour after hour, trying to perfect.
Jamie Collyer · Feb 23, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Despite all that, Xenon Valkyrie+ is something I easily see myself coming back to whenever I have a free moment and my Vita in hand. It can be a cruel experience for sure and some alterations to the overall design would go a long way, but it’s still a fun little game I can play seriously for hours or casually on a lunch break.
CJ Andriessen · Dec 19, 2017 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Xenon Valkyrie+ is by no means a bad game, just one that needed a little bit more time in development to better polish the gameplay. The individual elements are interesting, but when put together, things don't gel right. The level design doesn't take advantage of the characters' skills; instead, it puts them through similar-looking cave and industrial levels littered with easily destructible scenery.
William Lowery · Aug 06, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - There's nothing here that fans of the genre haven't seen before. If the inexplicable attack patterns and unfair deaths don't drive people away, they will soon discover that there's nothing really compelling or clever about the game. In short, it's not worth the grey hairs.
Gabriel Jones · Mar 07, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Xenon Valkyrie+ is playable, but there is just so much left to be desired. Feeling more like an alpha version with tremendous potential, the longer you play, the more you realise everything you want the game to be, it sadly is not, and players will be left with a mediocre platformer/rogue title instead. If this was a demo of what was to come, it would be so easy to sing its praises but, as it is, it only serves as a source of aggravation for what it could have been.
