  • XBlaze Code: Embryo is a visual novel at heart, so expect very little in the way of traditional gameplay. You can alter the fate of the story by reading different in-game articles, but while the system that the title employs is unique, it's also far too ambiguous. All in all, you're left with a visually appealing visual novel that doesn't really have a strong enough protagonist to carry it.

  • Friendly to BlazBlue lovers and newcomers alike, XBlaze is a beautifully crafted visual novel with a unique (though trope-filled) story and a clever path system. Unless you're offended by a little fanservice or the lack of combat, you'd be hard pressed to find a reason NOT to pick this one up.

  • With multiple endings, a rather generous number of trophies to obtain (you get one for merely starting up the game), and a fantastic plot, Xblaze Code: Embryo is a slick entry in the Blazblue universe that falls short on gameplay. If you’re a fan of series or simply a fan of anime, it’s worth a playthrough. Just don’t expect deep gameplay mechanics.

  • XBlaze would be thoroughly unremarkable if not for its utter—and possibly record-breaking—contempt for the player. If you're interested in visual novels as a genre, the Vita has a handful of titles significantly better than this one. And if you're somehow compelled to explore the rich back story of the BlazBlue universe, there's always fan fiction.

  • Genre clichés and visual glitches aside, this is a solid visual novel. It isn't likely to appeal to a wide audience; fans of BlazBlue (and fans of graphic novels or anime in general) will enjoy it, but it's hard to imagine that anyone else will. Still, there's something to be said about making games specifically for the fans, and Xblaze Code: Embryo performs solidly on that front.

  • If you’re a fan off the BlazBlue series, pick up a copy. If not, then you may want to avoid it unless a visual novel is exactly the experience you’re looking for
