- It's tempting to forgive WWE 2K17 the bugs, the awkward controls, the glitchy animations, and the inability to respond to the biggest change in how WWE operates since the last time the brands split. It is, after all, the only major wrestling game around. There are no other options, and going up against the biggest stars in WWE is a compelling fantasy.
Phil Savage · Feb 13, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - WWE 2K17 is superior in a few ways to its predecessor, with a much improved wrestling system. At the same time, loading times are worse and there's a lack of Showcase leaves a gap the MyCareer and Universe modes simply can't fill. Aesthetically lacking and, frankly, boring too much of the time, it's hard to recommend this. Particularly when considering the prohibitive DLC practices that keep active members of the roster behind a pay wall.
Chris Wray · Dec 16, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The controls can be difficult to master, especially with no tutorial option available, and those who enjoy the surrealism possible in previous entries might not be thrilled with the grounded aspects of the game. While there are plenty of things to do, WWE 2K17 relies on the player to find its heart, rather than offering up anything to feel attached too.
Alexander Thomas · Oct 21, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - WWE 2K17 is a poor simulation of the WWE product, often because it seems ashamed of pro wrestling. This is a television universe where Jon Stewart has interfered in back-to-back SummerSlams -- you either get on board with the nonsense or you give the license to somebody else.
Mike Cosimano · Oct 21, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The WWE 2K series seems to be suffering from the fatigue of being an annual title, and never has that been more evident than in WWE 2K17. A confusing multitude of controls keep the game from being something fun that anyone can pick up, and a host of glitches keep those who follow the series from wanting to put in the effort. Perhaps it’s time the “New Era” arrives for this franchise.
Matt Buchholtz · Oct 21, 2016 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - WWE 2K17 is the WrestleMania 20 matchup between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg (ironically the cover athlete and pre-order DLC respectively): major hype, a few good flashes, but ultimately a bit disappointing. I can see the future of WWE 2K and I like it, but 2K17’s not quite there yet.
Jason Fanelli · Oct 21, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Although WWE 2K17 didn’t need to be a strong step forward from its previous release, it’s still difficult not to be disappointed with how little has changed from year-to-year. The core combat is best at its most chaotic, whether online or with friends, but still often ranges from frustratingly inconsistent to annoyingly repetitive, and the desolate nature of MyCareer and WWE Universe don’t do much to help players forget that.
Sam Spyrison · Oct 19, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The core gameplay loop is fine, and there's some enjoyment to be had with this game's more measured take on wrestling, but... even for what it is, WWE 2K17 is ultimately a disappointing game that falls short.
Pramath Parijat · Oct 19, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - WWE 2K17 is a marginally better game than 2K16, as the core mechanics feel like they've been refined a bit, but with the fantastic 2K Showcase consigned to the bin and no new modes to replace it, this is a package that's now sorely lacking. You might as well play last year's game, unless you're a massive fan that has to have the most up to date roster possible. Otherwise, WWE 2K17 is an enjoyable wrestling game that could still do with a bit of a kick up the backside for next year's instalment.
Richard Walker · Oct 19, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - WWE 2K17 doesn’t make any big, drastic changes, but its smart gameplay tweaks have revitalized match types I’d ignored the past few years. I really miss 2K Showcase, and 2K17 is still weak in areas that I feel should have been shored up by now, but its excellent combat, and generous amounts of customization help it retain its title.
