- The game’s original style was completely preserved, some moments in the game completely mirror the ‘80s original. The improved hand-drawn graphics, paired with fine rendering and a wonderful soundtrack make up for one of the best old school platform revivals. The ensemble is concluded with the game relapsing into the old version on some occasions, together with 8-bit sound and graphics, which is a trip down memory lane for many fans. Definitely recommended and well worth the price.

Playdigious did a lovely job with the port and it is perfect if you have an MFi controller. If you don’t, the touch screen controls are definitely not a fantastic way to play this because of how it controls in general. If you want to play this on touch, make sure to spend some time customising the controls through button sizes and positions because it doesn’t feel great on the iPhone 7 to me and is much better with touch on iPad.

It looks great, sounds great and still plays wonderfully too. It was a great game in 1989 and whilst maybe some of that greatness has now gone, because games have simply moved on since then, it is still certainly a really fun game and one that I did not want to put down from start to finish. I highly recommend playing through it and maybe this can be the catalyst for Wonder Boy to make a full comeback.
Jamie Ward · Jun 05, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a beautiful game that long time fans will enjoy immensely. Even though gameplay can be a little frustrating and outdated it’s still a game worth checking out and it’s one of the better adventure games available on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
Kaelyn Daugherty · May 12, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap may be out of its time – it's rock hard, a little obtuse, and won't lead you by the hand – but benefits from a stylish and sensitive makeover that stays painstakingly true to the mechanically perfect original. The Dragon's Trap is a remarkable thing, then. Not only is it a retro remake that's actually not crap, it's as good as the day it first came out and even holds its own against modern releases.
Tom Baines · May 08, 2017 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1, SwitchRead full review - Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap sets the bar incredibly high for future recreations of classic games. Not only does it pay reverence to the source material in nearly every conceivable way, it also manages to modernise the original game through an astounding level of quality in presentation. The Dragon’s Trap is gorgeous, charming and challenging, and while some outdated design elements and disappointing bosses are sure to irk players, there’s no denying that it’s still a hell of a lot of fun after all these years.
Brandon Langrock · Apr 29, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a fun, nostalgic romp that brings some of its legacy issues along for the ride. For those that can adapt to that, it is a great game. I am all for bringing back lesser-known titles, especially from consoles such as the Master System, as long as the same love and care is poured into them.
Ken McKown · Apr 21, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap raises the bar for remasters far above and beyond slapping on a few filters and calling it a day. Given how much I loved Lizardcube’s attention to detail and passion behind this SEGA classic, I would almost beg to see the team tackle my favorite game in the series. If Lizardcube and Dotemu can put the same passion into Wonder Boy V: Monster World III, I could see myself falling in love all over again.
Kai Powell · Apr 19, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap shines as one of the best retro remakes yet. It knows not to tamper too much with the enjoyable, exploration-driven gameplay that made the original so good, instead focusing on updating the presentation to reintroduce the game to a new generation of players. While it's a bit on the short side--you can probably beat it over the course of a lazy Saturday--its small world is packed with personality. Whether you've played the original or are completely new to the weird, wacky world of Wonder Boy, The Dragon's Trap is an adventure well worth embarking on.
Heidi Kemps · Apr 19, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - While it can’t escape a few of the original title’s annoyances, it is still an engaging and enjoyable experience for 2D-platformer and series fans, and will most likely garner the franchise some new fans, who will come into contact with the series for the first time with this game like I did. I never owned the Sega Master System, but I am elated that I got to experience this all-but-forgotten gem.
