  • Winter Ember is a game with potential, yet lacking polish in some gameplay elements. While the stealth, crafting, and lock picking feel nicely thought out, the combat itself feels stiff and not that enjoyable. This will push you more to a stealth-based playstyle but as the enemies don’t really react to what goes on around them, this also becomes boring after a while.

  • Winter Ember was a really solid effort into the top-down stealth genre. When you’re in stealth and exploring, you really do feel like an assassin in a fantasy world and are carving your own name in it. But, outside of stealth the game is a shell of itself. It feels like stealth and exploration was the most important element of Winter Ember, which is understandable — but a lot of other gameplay elements were sacrificed just so that that could be achieved. Still, this is definitely one to try out and smash out in a few days and one I’m certain you’ll have a blast with.

  • Some great ideas are hobbled by awkward execution in Winter Ember. For every bright spark there are a handful of quirks and issues that are just too prevalent to overlook. It’s just a shame that the parts don’t form a cohesive whole, and instead we’re left with a game that is stuck in the shadows of the greats.

  • There’s more to a game than atmosphere, though, and that’s where Winter Ember is a mixed success. The levels are filled with confusing repetition and uncertain goals. Stealth and close-up combat aren’t equally viable, despite upgrades to both. As a result, Arthur never quite becomes the all-around badass protagonist you want him to be, and the game’s elements never fully come together.

  • What works about Winter Ember is almost entirely overshadowed by the frustrating moment-to-moment experience that never settles into a true, precise stealth game.

  • Winter Ember is an isometric stealth game that provides a new take to the genre. It has a unique story that gets you hooked. Action sequences are excellent but walking through darkness and evading enemies make it shine the most. There are hiccups with its controls and interaction, yet it ticks the right boxes for hours of fun playtime.

  • Winter Ember is a game I am heavily conflicted on. On one hand it’s an immersive Thief inspired game with tense stealth aspects. On the other hand it’s frustrating to play, thanks to its zoomed in camera and lack of consistency. There’s a lot of potential that was unfortunately wasted in here.

  • Winter Ember can be a fun challenge to make it through undetected. However, balance that with shonky combat and dodgy cover mechanics (you only seem to be able to move into cover from a certain distance) and to be honest, there are better stealth games out there. Aragami 2, for instance, which is a lot more fun to play.

  • It may have some technical issues that highlight the indie budget, but the good in Winter Ember outweighs the bad. It has all the stealth trappings; the frustration, the patience, as well as the stickiness of the combat, to harken back to the olden days. It may not be original, yet it doesn’t matter when it looks this nice and plays like the classics.
