  • Wanted: Dead has truly been an experience. Combat takes center stage, though the fun of hacking and slashing away at lesser enemies is soon overshadowed by getting pummeled into oblivion during boss fights. Some aspects of the game could use some ironing out, but, otherwise, it’s a fun enough experience to pass the time and wrack up achievements & trophies.

  • With some more work, Wanted: Dead could be that hilariously fun love letter to retro anime and games of the early noughties that I desperately wanted it to be. As of right now, it’s just far too short, clunky and directionless to be worth the price of admission.

  • Wanted: Dead is one of those games that sounds great on paper but ends up being utterly disappointing. While the game still has a certain charm because of its overall atmosphere, the original cast of characters, the mini-games, and the cheesy story delivery, it ends up falling short due to its shoddy graphics and extremely unsatisfying gameplay loop.

In its best moments, it feels like an oasis in a desert, a balm for the self-serious excesses of Sony‘s first party offerings. At its worst, it’s incredible how something so seemingly confident and free in its own strangeness can make such obvious and dull choices.

  • Wanted: Dead's challenging settings, unique approach to battle, and visual presentation will attract some interest, but they certainly won't be adequate to hold most players' interest for very long. Its gameplay mechanism and core plot shortcomings made it difficult to enjoy as a whole. If you, however, like hack and slash, decapitating enemies, and are willing to die often to do it, then Wanted: Dead is the game for you.

  • Wanted: Dead is too janky to happily exist in mainstream gaming in 2023. But it'll definitely strike a chord with a niche audience—one I'm sadly not a part of. Soleil had a vision, and it can be proud that it damn well achieved it. It won't be for everybody, but for those who it is for, they'll have a good-ass time with it.

  • Wanted: Dead is a completely offline experience. There are no microtransactions or multiplayer modes to be found. Due to the difficulty level, it may take some players 20 hours to complete, while others might struggle more and take twice that amount of time if they can ever indeed finish it. The disconnected nature of Wanted: Dead is a welcome feature in this age of always-connected games, that’s for sure.

  • The unforgiving gameplay and repetitious action will leave some utterly appalled, but the radiant cast of reprobates, silly mini-games, baffling dialogue, and shameless commitment to the bit results in one of the most bewildering, hypnotic releases in some time. Simply put: Wanted: Dead is a fucking train wreck, and you better get your ticket punched.

  • Wanted: Dead is an incredibly disappointing action effort that presents some decent ideas but fails to execute any of them properly. The idea of fusing hack and slash combat with shooter mechanics has lots of potential here, and the cyberpunk setting is initially intriguing.

  • Wanted: Dead is, at its worst, a frustratingly bad action game, but in its inexplicable presentation, nonsensical storytelling, and baffling character dialogue, it's difficult to completely dismiss. There's undeniable fun to be had here in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way, and that might even be enough for the game to secure cult status somewhere down the line.
