- After an agonising delay for PlayStation Vita owners, Volume has finally landed on our favourite handheld and it plays like a dream. With great gameplay and a perfect port, Volume on the Vita is a must-own title for any Metal Gear fans and another top-notch title from Mike Bithell.
Charlie Large · Jan 11, 2016 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - It is fun, but I can’t see anyone but the most dedicated puzzle gamers slogging through the main story, and then going off to play more of the online levels. I got through about 70% of the story mode before I threw in the towel from the constant grind. Your mileage may vary with this title, but for me, I just could not get enough out of it.
Jason Ashman · Sep 29, 2015 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - Volume isn’t without its flaws, but the highs that it’s able to hit completely squash the minor gripes players might have. One of the best pure stealth titles in recent years, Mike Bithell and his team have not only captured some of the storytelling magic that made Thomas Was Alone so special, but they also managed to capture the best parts of a genre that sees a great deal of failures. With its instant restart system, mechanics have been put in place to prevent frustration, which couldn’t be more key in creating a solid stealth title.
Matt Whittaker · Sep 01, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Volume is an incredibly entertaining and smart stealth puzzler that will test your brain, even if it doesn't challenge it too much. It's a simple, but extremely effective game that will pose questions in an appealing story without forcing an answer on you. There's an extremely easy to use but effective level creator included to add hours of gameplay through playing through other fun, user-created levels.
Chris Wray · Aug 27, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Volume is a bit of a mixed bag. Underutilised voice performances and some really nasty technical issues stand in the way of the title getting top marks. However, it's difficult for us to deny that the actual minute-to-minute gameplay is damn fun. Really cool art and a great score pair to ensure that Mike Bithell's latest is worth a shout – but we'd advise proceeding with caution, because there are still kinks to be worked out.
Graham Banas · Aug 26, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Part of the appeal of Volume is its clean, beautifully minimalist design. As a result, Volume’s level editor is a breeze to use and beginning to see some excellent additions, including remakes of Metal Gear Solid VR levels and a fiendishly difficult rendition of Space Invaders. Levels are made distinct by different palettes, but still consist of largely the same toolkit of objects, rearranged over and over, making development largely a matter of drag and drop, with frills.
Emily Speight · Aug 25, 2015 Reviewed on PC, PS4, VitaRead full review - This, like the game’s shallow learning curve, ensures that Volume offers entertainment to suit your busy, modern life. Whether you’ve got a lonely night to kill or a just want to snatch a few gems during a brief lunch break, this game has you covered. In an industry increasingly defined by bloated production values and histrionic spectacle, Volume is a deft, focused example of quality design that succeeds thanks to a laser-focus on gameplay above all else.
Earnest Cavalli · Aug 18, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It’s a unique twist on the Robin Hood story, and while the game’s main storyline might not have been as strong as I hoped, I think it is definitely a great follow-up to Bithell’s success with Thomas Was Alone. It might not grab your heart the same way those geometric shapes with human emotions did, but it’s still an experience worth having, and I can’t wait to see what wonderful creations come out of the game’s map editor.
Josh Hawkins · Aug 18, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Volume may suffer from a few issues of poorly designed AI and easily exploited level design, but I still found a great number of challenging rooms with an intriguing story to match, and plenty of room to master. The added bonus of being able to show how to complete a room by livestreaming a game about streaming how to complete a room… is just icing on the meta cake.
Brendan Graeber · Aug 18, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - These pieces of exposition and characterization feel forced, as if they don't belong. But when you're able to avoid the barrier the overarching narrative creates, Volume flows from one level to the next with the aptitude of a great stealth game, and the inventiveness of a clever puzzle title. It stumbles when trying to tell a story, but excels at communicating phenomenal mechanics.
