  • At its core, Virtua Tennis 4 remains a game that can be casually enjoyed by anyone, but for the more serious tennis crowd, it feels outdated and even unresponsive at times. Here’s hoping Sega goes back to the drawing board, because a slightly updated roster and tacked-on motion controls aren’t nearly enough to revitalize this established series.

  • The game looks colourful and bright, with the action running at a fluid 60 frames per second. It really is a sight to behold, with SEGA making no noticeable compromises to the fidelity of the PS3 version. Loading is also much better on the PS Vita, with costume changes and matches loading much more swiftly on the handheld than console.

  • With solid graphics, great control, and some addictive gameplay elements, these are only slightly hampered by some mixed sound. In the end you really can’t go wrong adding Virtua Tennis 4 to your shopping basket when you make that decision to buy a PS Vita, as it is a great sports title for any gamer on the go.

  • Ever the more lighthearted tennis game than its competitors, the arcade feel of Virtua Tennis 4 is a welcome addition to the Vita lineup. It handles well, looks nice and has a style that lends itself very well to portability of tennis.

  • For the most part, there's little about Virtua Tennis 4 that'll surprise longtime fans, making this entry feel like more of the same. Yes, it comes with Vita exclusive bonuses, but you'll quickly grow tired of them and fall back on intense volleys and furious cross court smashes. To that end, World Tour Edition falls short of an ace, but still manages to hold serve.

  • Virtua Tennis 4 remains as fun as others in its series due to succeeding at its main goal of providing arcade-style entertainment. Where it falls short is in everything else that surrounds the core of the game, from variety to innovation. For Virtua Tennis to survive, it needs new ideas, and a more robust experience wrapped around the fast-paced experience.

  • If this is your first time in front of the net, Virtua Tennis 4 will make you glad you picked up a racket

  • Virtua Tennis 4 might be more arcade than simulation, but its control scheme is showing its age. It lacks refinement and makes you feel like you're playing a sophisticated version of Pong, rather than a game of tennis. There's fun to be had if you can see past the simplistic controls, or if you delve into one of the many minigames with friends, but it's hardly worth it.

  • Ultimately, Virtua Tennis 4 tries to please everyone by walking a fine line between sim and arcade, but regrettably, it never commits to either camp

Virtua Tennis 4 is a fun tennis game, after you dig through all the fluff: Mini-games and a needlessly complex career mode. If you already got your fill of Virtua Tennis 3 then there isn't a lot of new stuff in here, which is a shame, but it's still a very solid arcade tennis title. At least PS3 owners now get online play (in theory!), and Trophies this time around.
