  • Overall, the gameplay was just as fun as the last time I played. The story fell flat but honestly the voice acting was superb enough for me to not loathe hearing the characters talk. The multiplayer didn’t feel as if it was stapled on as an afterthought—the arenas are more than enough to hold up that argument. I wholeheartedly recommend waiting for a sale to nab this gem at a discount, but if you aren’t scrambling for spare change like me, then perhaps the $19.99 price isn’t an issue.

  • Victor Vran would be a real standout if we didn’t already have Bastion’s narrator, Diablo’s combat, or Torchlight’s cartoonishly attractive loot system. It’s good while simultaneously being not as good as the games that dominate this genre. Still: all of those games were released years ago, and fans of dungeon-crawling click-em-ups are always hankering for more.

I’ll admit, I had no idea what the game was like and by just looking at it, seemed typical. Yet the amount of fun the game offers, providing players with more agility and faster action, really gives a sense of control some isometric games don’t deliver. I was thoroughly impressed with Victor Vran, and I think most others will be too.

  • There are problems with just about every aspect of Victor Vran. The issues range from small to large, from the glitches to frequent crashes and audio cutouts. Still, there’s a lot to enjoy about it. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but the entertaining combat, above all else, is what would get me to return and burn away more hours hunting the creatures of the night. The lack of content and variety is a concern, though this may be alleviated with the planned free DLC.

  • Victor Vran is a solid action-RPG, no doubt about it. I was hoping for more depth and permanence in the skill system like you might find in more traditional RPGs, but I can appreciate the choices the developers made given the core mechanic of the game: fast-paced combat with a variety of weapons and enemies. I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of action-RPGs with more of a focus on combat and less on character building.

  • Victor Vran is far from a complete game. Despite the presence of magic it is no Elder Scrolls or Final Fantasy, lacking the freedom to explore, story and diversity of these titles. Where the game excels is in its fast, frantic combat and the continual growth of skills, weapon upgrades and magical powers which make the battles increasingly diverse and rewarding. If you enjoy melee action you will enjoy Victor Vran. I certainly did.

  • It’s enough to get you playing in a very particular way, or even returning at a later date to tick off those that were initially just too tough. Again, none of this really does much to separate it from its obvious reference points; even much of the visual design – from its UI to flourishes such as the way gold erupts from the ground after downing tougher enemies – harkens back to Blizzard’s efforts with Diablo III. Unoriginal might be the best way of describing Victor Vran, but as far as Diablo clones go, there are much worse to lose your time to.

  • It lacks some of the genre staples, such as a relatively complex character advancement system, or gobs of items to find (or craft), yet it manages to be tons of fun through its simple, but at the same time great, battle mechanics, which make the job of slaughtering baddies feel less like a repetitive click-fest and more like how a true action game should be. Sure, the replay value is somewhat disappointing, and, as a whole, this won't really threaten the elites, but it's definitely on the right path to doing so.

  • If nothing else, it feels like a game that really needs a sequel to help get a decent story and more expansive world alongside the excellent gameplay that’s already in place. Victor Vran is worth a go, just don’t expect it to be a time-sink akin to other dungeon crawlers, it simply doesn’t have the longevity.

  • Victor Vran shows that Haemimont Games have more in their arsenal than just city building with dictators. As far as Diablo clones go, it isn’t of the same calibre as Path of Exile due to its rather simplistic nature and the overabundance of the six primary enemy types, but it does feature some neat gameplay twists of its own. It’s worth a look if you are starved of action RPGs, with the emphasis on action.
