  • When Verdun works, the mixture of tension and uniqueness it provides is unlike anything else and utterly engaging. Too often, however, the game gets in its own way, either due to technical issues or poor design decisions. It’s an incredibly interesting and unique game, but its tedium and technical issues should be considered before you enter its trenches.

  • Verdun offers a unique experience not seen elsewhere on the PS4. It’s realistic, historically accurate and sometimes satisfying gameplay can’t make up for the fact that the game’s community is almost non-existent, gameplay is riddled with technical issues and the lack of a proper tutorial can make the game downright frustrating.

  • Verdun will be classed as something of an acquired taste. It’s a refreshing change from the rest of the first-person shooters and goes to great lengths to ground itself in the reality of what trench warfare would have been like. And while it has its moments, it is riddled with imperfections that can fatally damage the player’s experience.

  • Nobody is playing this game because it’s a technical mess, and I can’t recommend it to anyone due to that. If you want to play Verdun, then pick it up on PC. Sadly, the PlayStation 4 version is an inferior version that launched dead on arrival.

  • I admit that, complaints aside, I found Verdun growing on me. I became immersed in its careful pacing and focus on squad movement. But though I put about twenty hours into the game, I don't ache to return to its trenches. Verdun somewhat succeeds in its lavish goal, but its road to glory is lengthy still. Until then, it sits on the edge of the line, waiting for the rallying cry.

  • You have to give the devs a certain amount of respect for throwing their hat into this particular ring, but it’s a risk unlikely to pay real dividends when the big-hitters join in. The subject is one rarely tackled, and the tense horror of trench warfare and frantic one-shot encounters occasionally elevate the action considerably, but an abundance of performance problems and sub-par presentation render Verdun something of a mess.

  • Verdun’s goal is an admirable one, to capture the feel of warfare on the Western Front, on occasions it manages to do that and be fun. The rest of the time, it’s an unintuitive slog. It might be a better game on PC, but on PlayStation 4, it’s almost certainly not going to be this year’s most fun or engaging WWI shooter.

  • It may also be that in the future the console version gets patched into a more playable form. We certainly hope so, as the setting and gameplay seems unique even compared to Battlefield 1. But while DICE’s game may have made WWI cool and interesting, Verdun only illustrates how difficult a task that was in the first place.

  • Overall I really enjoyed my time with Verdun and I will certainly be going back for more. I’m not a huge fan of modern FPS games, but I will be checking out the new Battlefield game now as I’ve enjoyed the World War One setting. The game has a very different pacing to modern shooters and that’s not a bad thing. The game is best played with friends but the different modes to offer some gameplay variation and there are a lot of weapons to play around with. I do suggest giving this game a go, just don’t expect the same experience you would get with say Battlefield or Call of Duty.

  • Much like the conflict that the game shares its namesake with, Verdun is a ferocious and tense multiplayer shooter the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time. Generously stuffed with player-made emergent moments on the battlefield and an incredible sense of place, Verdun is not just a great take on one of history’s more marginalised wars, it also happens to be a resoundingly solid shooter in its own right too.

About the game

The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun France in 1916. The game includes many historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium.
