  • Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a gem that RPG enthusiasts should certainly try out; if they don’t mind a few rough edges here and there. The game offers quite a few interesting stories, with one bigger narrative stringing everything together, while still providing you with intricate mechanics and an entertaining gameplay loop.

  • The game’s mix of 2D platforming and RPG mechanics wouldn’t be out of place in today’s indie scene, and ditto for its slightly opaque nature. Valkyrie Profile hails from a time when games weren’t afraid to have mysteries, and while you’ll have to do a little digging to see everything this title has to offer, the experience is well worth it.

  • Combat here is uniturn-basede genre in that it is turn-based, but each of your four party members is mapped to each of the PlayStation controller’s face buttons. A set skill is chosen before combat for each character which is their default, and combining these attacks to break through enemy armor, and guard allows you to slay your foes.

  • The game looked beautiful at the time, and if you're okay with the dated visuals, the art design is still top-notch. The music is the real start of the show. Valkyrie Profile was probably the single best work of prolific RPG musician Motoi Sakuraba, and it has one of the best soundtracks in gaming, bar none.

  • Valkyrie Profile uses the conventions of a dungeon crawler to highlight an aspect of games, and really humanity itself, that often goes understated. The path to our true calling is vague, confusing, and full of trial and error.

  • There’s a unique combat and progression system, detailed pixel art, and a fascinating narrative. But most of my biggest issues are in these same areas. The graphics for this release are ill-suited to modern TVs. Progression is obtuse and murky. And the combat quickly wears out its welcome.

  • Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a terrific turn-based JRPG reborn once more for contemporary audiences. Its impressive freedom with player choice dictating combat progression and the endings, compelling writing, and satisfactory replayability make it a must-play for fans of the genre.

  • This port is superb in almost every respect, but if you don’t have an MFi controller, you may find the virtual controls to be a bit of a bear at times. Still worth it? You bet.

  • Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a very difficult game to score. Its high price-tag and emphasis on staying faithful to the original - poor translations included - suggest it's a must for fans of the original game and series. Everyone else will likely find the compressed and invasive sound effects and the jarring, often nonsensical text prompts, a little too much, but those who stick with it are likely to find a solid, deep action RPG with a unique setting and story to accompany it.

  • The mobile port might not be perfect, but the game underneath is a work of outlying genius.
