- The fast, fluid, and satisfying combat system is what carries an otherwise mediocre title bogged down by washed out visuals and uninspired level design.
Henry Yu · Nov 21, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There's little doubt that Square Enix will put more effort into developing the stories and characters in the future. Having all the elements necessary to become a classic, VALKYRIE ELYSIUM is a bit inconsistent experience despite having a great gameplay mechanism. At the same time, its uninspired story and level design could have been better. Although this recreation makes a fantastic attempt at starting from scratch, it will be remembered as something other than a timeless work of art.
Rayan · Nov 18, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - What Valkyrie Elysium lacks in story and world building though can be kind of forgiven because of how fun the combat is. I enjoy some fast, and fluid combat and luckily VE delivers. Inputs are on the similar side only using std attack and heavy attack button; but the more complex stuff comes in when you start using the Einherjar and the various ‘Divine Arts’ which are the magical abilities.
Terrence Johnson · Nov 14, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Valkyrie Elysium is a decent appetizer or first course of a much larger meal for JRPG fans — and for the upcoming God of War Ragnarok — but like most appetizers, it’s rarely the most memorable part of the dining experience.
Jon Hueber · Nov 02, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Valkyrie Elysium is not really a bad game, it’s just bland and forgettable. The title feels like a generic run-of-the-mill Action RPG from start to finish and the somewhat basic plot and shoddy graphics don’t make this game stand out from the crowd.
Ibuki · Oct 19, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - A fast-paced combat system and operatic soundtrack from Motoi Sakuraba aren't enough to save Valkyrie Elysium from a fate worse than Ragnarok: mediocrity.
Kai Powell · Oct 13, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Valkyrie Elysium is a mostly technically competent game weighed down by the dullness of its story, setting, and strategy. There are glimmers of fun in the combat and some of the dialogue--the rare mid-level Einherjar banter is always welcome--but it's not enough to overcome stifling mediocrity. Valkyrie Elysium is a mere pretender to the glory of this series' past endeavors.
Heidi Kemps · Oct 12, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - A few slight adjustments could salvage the almost-stellar combat from an otherwise forgettable game and make it fairly easy to recommend if you want to switch your brain off and rampage. As it stands, though, your mindless fun is consistently interrupted by systems seemingly built to prevent a flow state, perhaps as a lasting hangover of its JRPG heritage.
Daniel Solomon · Oct 11, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Valkyrie Elysium delivers an inconsistent experience with its mix of good gameplay, uninspiring plot, and level design. This remake is an admirable effort at a fresh start, but it won't go down in history as a classic.
Azfar Rayan · Oct 11, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - It may look and play differently, but it certainly has the heart of the series in it. Though Valkyrie Elysium is much better than I’d expected, I’m hopeful the next entry in the series will be less restrained and “safe,” opting for crazier and flashier instead. In the meantime, I’ll continue trying to will Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist into existence. Maybe this time, it’ll work.
