  • This review took a while as I truly legitimately sat down and mulled over the game, wondering if there was anything that I truly had a problem with, but the truth is that I didn’t. I enjoyed every single second of Unicorn Overlord in a way that I haven’t enjoyed any game in many years.

  • Unicorn Overlord is a masterpiece of a strategy role playing game. Its presentation in giving players freedom to play as they like, go as strategically deep as they like, and the masterful onboarding of often-overly-complicated SRPG elements make it a compelling and beautiful experience. If you’re unfamiliar with SRPGs or are a longtime fan, look no further than Unicorn Overlord.

  • Unicorn Overlord boldly combines beloved features from various tactical RPG classics, blending innovative mechanics with challenging gameplay. Despite its narrative shortcomings and occasional frustrations, the game offers a rewarding experience for players with an appetite for strategy.

  • Unicorn Overlord is a game focused on the imagery of unicorns — the Unicorn Ring, specifically — and one representative of a unicorn, i.e. a rare, greatly-desired thing. While repetitive enemy encounters and mundane micromanagement add a layer of tedium to the proceedings, they don't undermine everything amazing about the game: an interesting cast of characters; impossibly-deep tactical role-playing mechanics; a dizzying amount of engaging, rewarding content; and peerless artistic assets. In the end, it's one of Vanillaware's finest titles and an early contender for Game of the Year. It will be a long time before we get another one like it.

  • The games Unicorn Overlord was inspired by didn’t have a template to follow, so they took risks to see how they could leave their own marks. Unicorn Overlord seems allergic to risk-taking, and it makes for a safe and enjoyable product that fails to introduce anything new. So when I was given just a passable game, I couldn’t help but be let down.

  • Unicorn Overlord wears its influences on its sleeves, but that is a good thing. It's part Ogre Battle, part Fire Emblem, and part its entirely own thing, and the end result is an absolute blast to play. Add to that the gorgeous visuals, and it's a game that hits all of the marks. The only problems are some minor balance issues, and even those don't detract from the overall fun experience. If you're a fan of strategy RPGs, you owe it to yourself to try out Unicorn Overlord.

  • Unicorn Overlord is one of the best tactical strategy RPGs to have been released for the Nintendo Switch. Maybe one of the best games, period. No matter which series first made you a fan of the genre, Unicorn Overlord will help you discover that thrill all over again.

  • Unicorn Overlord is not quite enough to dethrone Vanillaware’s previous title, 13 Sentinels, but it’s not far off. With an extremely solid tactical strategy campaign that allows more casual players to engage in all of its complexities, it’s an easy recommendation for any strategy fan or fantasy fan in general. It doesn’t utilise all of its long playtime effectively with an unremarkable first half, but the gameplay and phenomenal artwork are more than enough to keep you going until it picks up.

  • Unicorn Overlord surprised me. I was surprised to enjoy the auto-battle combat and the world. I was equally surprised to see me spend 40 hours on it in a work week. It's a gorgeous looking world with stunning art. It's a must play for fans of strategy RPGs and Vanillaware alike.

  • Unicorn Overlord is Vanillaware’s custom-built device for capturing the heart of anyone who’s loved watching tiny units bash against each other on a map. It puts a lot of love into each of those units, from what they do and how you can manage them, to their art and direction, down to making each new addition feel impactful. It’s a campaign full of strategy goodness, and I can forgive some quality-of-life nitpicks and repetition when the end result is just this damn good.
