- I want to love Unholy, mostly due to a strong story, strange narrative, great visuals and sound. But it’s the gameplay and the direction the game goes, that lets it down. Instant death and stealth don’t work as well as they should, and I’ve found Unholy to be more buggy than I would like. So, Unholy is a mixed bag, but there’s certainly an interesting game in there, kicking around underneath the problems.
Gareth Brierley · Sep 29, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Unholy has some good moments, but it's let down with some odd gameplay choices and some janky cutscenes and poor acting.
Chris White · Sep 12, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The poor puzzles don't detract from the core stealth action, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for the unfathomably idiotic enemy AI. No matter how close guards are to you, you will always be able to hide in a locker and they will never try to pull you out. The enemies can't climb ladders, even the human ones that should be able to figure it out, so if you ever get in a tight spot you can simply climb up a ladder and look down on the helpless enemy below.
Samuel Corey · Aug 22, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Unholy is a mish-mash of interesting but underdeveloped ideas, with an intriguing aesthetic style. There are scares to be had but they’re often undermined by clunky design and a somewhat goofy dramatic delivery. Unholy is one of those games that I’m painfully ambivalent about; I love and hate parts of it. I can see the promise of a brilliant horror game here, but like the Prophet’s false promise of an eternal paradise, it’s one that goes unfulfilled.
Jonathan Trussler · Aug 21, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The opening of Unholy is certainly very intriguing. The amazing detail in the environment cannot be diminished, and the notes were a welcome addition to the game, proving that when the world-building was done right, it was done very right. But the bad controls and lacking enemy types make a sometimes boring, often frustrating experience that isn’t unplayable but is certainly lacking in execution.
Mariella Deadman · Aug 11, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - With the exception of the rich environmental detail to be found in its sinister underworld setting, Unholy otherwise offers precious little to praise. It’s not scary enough to succeed as a horror story, its controls are too clumsy to provide a satisfying stealth experience, and its enemy and puzzle variety are too limited to make any part of the journey feel truly distinct. What begins as an intriguing incursion into a cult-ruled realm soon unravels into a repetitive slog stuck in the shoes of an unlikeable lead character. Unholy is never quite unplayable, but it’s certainly uninspired, unwieldy, and unlikely to hold your interest all the way to its completion.
Tristan Ogilvie · Jul 20, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Ultimately, however, it’s hard to recommend Unholy. Outside of the environmental design, the mechanics don’t do much to scare or otherwise engage the player, the story is flat and uninteresting, and the characters are about as wooden as their animations. There aren’t even any particularly new juicy-but-flawed ideas that would make it worth recommending just for the experience. Unholy is one of those games that just kind of exists; it takes up time and occupies space, so if you’re looking for something to speed up the passing between cradle and grave then here you go.
Frajdę miałem natomiast z eksploracji, wykorzystywania kryształów w różnorakich kolorach do różnych celów i po prostu zwiedzania kolejnych, niezwykle klimatycznych obszarów. No i te “polskie” realia z czasów PRL-u…

About the game
Trailers & Screenshots:
Where is your child? Open the doors between your everyday reality and a dark unholy world to unveil the mystery. Explore both worlds to find clues, solve puzzles, decide whether you infiltrate or fight brutal enemies and stand up to an aberrant establishment.
Two parallel worlds to explore. The grey and cold reality on a brutalist post-Soviet Eastern European town and the creepy and twisted world of Unholy, a grotesque society ruled by a relentless priest caste.
• An intense psychological horror experience driven by a deep dark narrative storyline played over captivatingly dark quality visuals based on the works of reputed dark artist Tomasz Strzałkowski (Duality Games Art director and founder).
• A unique gameplay blend that combines meticulous exploration, intriguing puzzle solving, infiltration and stealth with innovative shooting dynamics.
• An innovative combat system. Use four different emotions: anger, fear, sadness and desire to interact with the environment (destroy obstacles, trigger mechanisms, overload circuits, illuminate your way) or to confuse, lure or damage your opponents.
• Masks! Everybody in the unholy world hides behind a mask and it can be the difference between life or death. Build your own mask to get new skills and improve your abilities or wear other masks to infiltrate, confuse your enemies and impersonate your opponents.
