  • The tactical, yet undeniably brutal sport (if it’s recognized by many state athletic commissions then yes, it is a sport) is rendered the best it’s ever been in digital form. From the striking to the grapple contests, Exhibition to Career mode, UFC 2009 Undisputed is a great game for sports and fighting fans alike.

The ceremonies are simple, the sponsors know their place, and in the Ultimate Fighter TV show you have the ultimate career mode waiting to be made

  • Beneath its standard run of modes and a fighting system almost too big to contain is an extremely fun and well-thought-out brawler that, even without the UFC license, would stand very strong. It's incredibly complicated, but that's also what makes it as deep and strategic as the real thing. Even if you aren't particularly fond of sweaty men pummeling the snot out of each other, you'll be surprised just how fun it can be.

  • Despite some clunky menus and the lackluster online performance, UFC 2009 Undisputed is a great fighting game that you don't have to be a fan of the sport to appreciate. Whether you're playing as a UFC superstar like Chuck Liddell or Georges St-Pierre, or nervously stepping into the octagon as an athletic approximation of yourself, great fights and good times are guaranteed.

  • If you're looking for a game you can play alone, UFC 2009 Undisputed will probably get pretty boring for you. Even with multiple difficulty settings, fighting the AI doesn't stay exciting for very long. But if you're in a household with multiple UFC fans or enjoy getting online, you'll love it.

UFC 2009 Undisputed has its fair share of issues for an up-start franchise, but that doesn't mean that UFC fans and non-fans alike won't have fun with the game once they get the complexities figured out. The career mode is fun and well-designed, the combat is cool and visually engaging, and the classic fights mode is sure to please UFC aficionados. If THQ can fix the blemishes and speed things up quite a bit so the physicality and true athleticism of the sport can shine through, we could have a serious contender on our hands.

  • There's room for improvement, certainly: the character creation tools are a bit limited when compared to similar titles, while the career mode could do with fleshing out a few of its ideas. However, neither of these complaints prevent Undisputed from being the best thing that Yuke's has made in years. It's stylish, fresh and deeply engaging. It is, in short, a bruising powerhouse of a game.

  • The balance of a fighting game can only truly be weighed several months after it's unleashed to the masses when it's possible to identify broken techniques that can be abused in high-level play. But first impressions so far are very promising, and Yuke's should be commended for crafting not only the best UFC game ever, but perhaps the best fighting system ever for a (wait for it) "real-life fighting simulation game".

  • UFC 2009's disappointment outside of the ring - due to a career mode that severely lacks in design, charm or excitement - is offset by some brilliant animation, a strong and responsive control system and a solid underlying fight mechanic. This combined with some top notch graphics and audio that expertly captures the UFC atmosphere results in a fighter that deserves any plaudits its inevitably got coming its way.
