  • Trepang2 is a very fun and surprisingly accomplished FPS that thrives on its physical and fast-paced action combat. Players who don't mind the simpler aesthetics will find a game that has a certain catharsis that up until now was pretty much only scratched by the original F.E.A.R.. It is more than worth a look and comes recommended on PlayStation 5.

  • It may sound like I’m focusing on the negatives too much here, but much of what I enjoyed about Trepang2‘s premise was ultimately undercut by its various weaknesses. What initially seems like a promising concoction of bloody firefights, psychic superpowers and absolute bedlam suffers from poor pacing, muddled direction, odd enemy AI and controls that are more suited to a mouse and keyboard than a controller. When it works as intended brief flashes of brilliance are tucked away in the combat, when taken as a whole it winds up being a fairly middling experience.

  • Trepang2 is a title that tries to recapture the magic of the classic F.E.A.R. franchise, managing to mimic certain aspects well, even improving upon them, while also failing to do so in others. The action-packed gameplay is mighty spectacular and incredibly satisfying when fighting against other soldiers, much less so when it’s against generic zombie-like enemies, flying mobs, or bullet sponge bosses, whose mechanics very much negate the perks of the shooting mechanics themselves.

  • Trepang2 may well surprise. Brilliant gameplay mechanics come to the fore, allowing the overall experience to be a lot of fun. The B-movie storyline is generic but it is still done with plenty of commitment and pace that you can forgive its melodrama. Away from that and the action is relentless, whilst slo-mo has never felt so good.

  • When Trepang2 is at its most gory it is a claret-drenched delight. Its attempts to delve into horror are less good.

  • Trepang2 is a very fun shooter that sometimes loses its focus and wants to be a Swiss army knife that does everything. It aims to be a run-and-gun military game that's also a stealthy horror title at the same time. It’s good to try and mix in variety, but the only tool we want to use is the one that makes us feel like an unstoppable killing machine.

  • Trepang2 is a solid shooter that feels amazing to play. When you’re incorporating the different mechanics, range of weapons and grenades, and smartly designed environments into combat, it’s liberating and constantly enjoyable. The story isn’t likely to grip you, and follows many familiar tropes of the genre, but who cares when you’re drowning in ammo and claret? It’s the perfect palette cleanser for those who want a break from FPS titles that ask too much of you nowadays, instead giving you a stripped back shooter that makes its fluid and varied gameplay the main focus.

  • I never wanted Trepang2 to end and that was the problem - it ended much, much too quickly for my tastes. While it lasted through, Trepang2 was a glossy, flying-kicking, baseball-sliding, slow-motion neck snapping first-person shooter extravaganza that provided me with some of the most satisfying shooting I've seen all year. More of this, please.

  • Trepang2 is probably the best shooter that we have played this year. The overall quality of this title exceeds our expectations because it feels amazing in every aspect. Visually it is highly pleasing to blow your enemies into little pieces and see the bullets, casings, and body parts fly around with a stream of blood accompanying them to their final resting spot. The high quality of the sound effects from the action, mixed with the great voice acting and inspiring music makes it a true action-packed experience. Overall, it was difficult to find anything wrong with this game and therefore we decided to give it the score it deserves.

  • Trepang2 plays things rather safely. It isn’t going to throw out sudden curve balls – or at least not succeed in its attempt. Still, what is presented is masterfully done. Fans of 20 year old shooters will get a thrill for 8-20 hours or more. However, Trepang2 isn’t any sort of gateway into the genre and converts people who are used to modern shooter mechanics like regenerating health or aiming down the sights.
