  • TrackMania 2 is a beautiful, heart-stopping, narcotic racing game. Its readiness to just sit there as operating system furniture, idling in the background before roaring to the fore, is a credit both to its engine and its design. To the PC, no less. Better still is how it has embraced different control schemes – the drift mechanics favour braking with Ctrl, or tweaking the deadzone on a 360 pad – while keeping the playing field level.

  • When you turn it all the way up, it's a great-looking game. But it's surrounded by an awful UI that feels like it wasn't designed to be used by actual humans and, due to a serious lack of an instruction manual for this digital-only release, it's not easy for new players to figure out what, exactly, is going on. It all holds TrackMania 2: Canyon back a little bit. A streamlined front-end and more clearly spelled-out progression would probably go a long way. But if you're up for digging around and find the idea of a driving game that's a little left-of-center exciting, TM2 is kind of incredible.

Nadeo's Trackmania series has always been about blending arcade-style racing with crazy track design, and Trackmania 2 is no different. It encourages an obsessive pursuit of the perfect racing line though outlandish tracks. You can have fun competing to be the fastest in a server or simply enjoy the thrill of soaring at high speed across yawning gaps and barreling through loops. It's a game about community and sharing and Nadeo does a good job of wrapping up the whole of the Trackmania experience – local multiplayer, online competition, track and car editors and worldwide rankings – into one package.

  • TrackMania 2: Canyon is a game that tries to cater to as many players as possible, even if the gulf between the simple and the advanced is rather wide. Whether you're heavily investing in the community aspect, or simply racing the different tracks to set some times and save a few sweet-looking replays, the game is loads of fun. While it's hard to shake the feeling that some things, like content sharing, could be a little less slapdash, it's also hard to ignore the potential for community expansion.

  • I liked the sense of accomplishment I felt after completing a complex level, and online play is entertaining. Racing game fans won’t find the same type of gameplay in Gran Turismo, as the arcade style gameplay leans more toward the casual crowd. There isn’t much to say about the bland sound and graphics, but the real draw to this game should be the level editor. If this is your sort of thing then you’ll get a lot out of TrackMania 2

  • TrackMania 2 Canyon offers just enough tweaks to the formula to make it worth the download. Visually, it's not the prettiest racer out there, but the lighting can be particularly gorgeous at times and the system requirements are very reasonable. As the community settles in again, the amount of content will only grow from here given the excellent creation tools included.

  • Trackmania has proved to be somewhat of a sleeper hit since the racing series was first released on the PC in 2003. In fact, the Trackmania lineage now boasts over 10 million registrations and a dedicated following within that. Trackmania2: Canyon is the most recent and grandest offering from French developer Nadeo, but is it worth consideration as a Christmas stocking filler?

  • Either way, Trackmania 2 is great fun, if not exactly the step forward we were hoping for. New players will have a fantastic time gunning for best times and whizzing through the air, while old Trackmania legends will either take to the new challenge, or wonder why it’s just the very same experience all over again. Only time will tell whether or not Trackmania 2 can be a worthy successor.

  • As a ghosted time-trial racer where collisions are non-existent, the struggle is internal and the other racers are members of an audience you perform for, there to silently goad and encourage you into going further. The warmth of the game comes from a community effort, huddling together as the season turns cold, in order to see everyone realise their own potential.
