- As it stands, I absolutely think Three Kingdoms a far better entry into the Total War series than Thrones of Britannia, though I wouldn’t rate it quite as high as Warhammer II. I appreciate the attention paid to the generals and heroes of the time, and while the duel mechanic is novel, I would not want to see it carried through to other games. In fact, most of my gripes with Three Kingdoms all deal with those ideas carrying forward into other games, as they all work well in context with the material they are currently attached too.
Brian · Jun 19, 2019 Reviewed on PC - In my time with Three Kingdoms, I gained a healthy respect for what Total War is. Even if it isn’t completely in my wheelhouse, the turn-based board game mode complements the battles well, providing a whole experience that can dive into whichever historical era it wants. Those historical elements hold a game with solid fundamentals that make it easy for me to want to get better at the game and grasp its many complexities.
Alex Santa Maria · May 30, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Total War: Three Kingdoms is the best the series has been in a decade. By emphasising on characters and their relationships, each campaign feels like an epic narrative of friendship and betrayal.
Emil Gunnarsson · May 30, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Total War: Three Kingdoms is an example of an established franchise being built around a theme, rather then building a theme to fit around an established franchise. Never before has a Total War game done more justice to it’s chosen setting, not just visually, but mechanically as well.
Thomas Medina · May 27, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, Total War: Three Kingdoms can be summed up as yet another great entry in the long-running series. While it may not be the absolute pinnacle of what Creative Assembly can achieve, it has become my favorite entry simply because of the setting used. We've reached a point where your personal favorite Total War will be determined more by the property being adapted than any worry about quality or gameplay factors.
Peter Glagowski · May 24, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Even with all reservations, Three Kingdoms is a worthy successor of the Total War brand. Unlike Thrones of Britannia, it makes beautiful use of its setting to create a unique depiction of a fantastic period of history and understands what makes the series fun. If you like the Ancient Chinese period and is searching for a new high level strategy game, look no more -- Three Kingdoms is the game you’re looking for.
Marcello Perricone · May 23, 2019 Reviewed on PC - It's not without its UI issues, but Total War 3 Kingdoms provides a beautiful, rich strategy that is well paced while enjoying a new layer of story depth through diplomacy and intrigue.
Jon Sutton · May 22, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While those looking for the pure historical war experience may find themselves wanting a bit more, with such a critical emphasis on the commanders and their supreme battlefield presence, those willing to indulge in a more prodigious past have lots to enjoy. With strict historical adherence out the window and a bit of a streamlined tactical combat experience, Three Kingdoms still has a lot to offer the strategy enthusiast.
Daniel Tack · May 20, 2019 Reviewed on PC - Its presentation is the icing on an already rich cake. If you’re a series veteran, you’ll find much to appreciate in this new setting, and if you’ve never tried a Total War game, but always been curious, you’d be hard pressed to find a better starting point than Three Kingdoms. Just remember, take it slow and always backstab.
Ricky Knight · May 18, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - That's the problem with there being so many Total War games at the moment. A new one comes out while the last two are still fresh in our memories. Three Kingdoms is a very good strategy game in which to experience 2nd century China, and I've spent dozens of enjoyable hours with it. When you zoom in close on the right details, whether it's two generals duelling or an enemy turning the vassal system against you, it's grand.
